New problems with AVG 8 free version - Errol help

Yesterday, AVG did an automatic update and a message came up saying the computer needed to be restarted for it to take effect.

I noticed that a red circle with an exclaimation mark has appeared over the AVG symbol at the bottom of my screen. Even after restart this has remained. When I click on my AVG shortcut, all I get is an error message "AVG User Interface has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience."

I checked out AVG's free webforum to see if this was a common issue and noticed that several people had posted about it. Unfortunately that forum is run by moderators who only seem interested in telling people off for making forum etiquette mistakes so none of those posts had received a useful answer.

My security panel indicates that my computer IS currently protected by my antivirus and firewall programs - so WHAT is going on with AVG? Is my antivirus working or not?

I'm posting here on GR as I know that loads of us use AVG and are likely to be experiencing the same problems. Personally I'm inclined to leave AVG to sort itself out as I have a hunch it is their problem to resolve. Is this a safe assumption to make?

Linda, like you I had the 2 icons this morning. The scan has since finished. One icon went but the one with the exclaimation mark is still there. I can't access the AVG panel to see the scan results. It looks like AVG's user interface is the thing causing the problem.

Have you tried restarting your pc? A lot of us did have problems with the updates on Thursday but they righted themselves Friday morning.

I've restarted the PC several of times since yesterday but the problem remains. If it hasn't righted itself by Monday, I'll probably remove AVG altogether and then reinstall it from scratch. Thanks for the advice.

I did try what you suggested but need a paid-for license number to open the repair installation. I have the free version but the license number is apparently invalid probably because I can't tell the ones from the is and the zeros from the Os. I even need the license number to email them to ask what the correct number is. Looks like I'm going to have to scrap AVG altogether. Oh dear!

SORTED! The information on AVG's own site was a wee bit misleading, hence me getting deadlocked with the license number. In the end I downloaded AVG free version 8.0.135 (version 8.0 build 135) which bears the date 7/1/2008 (presumably meaning 1st July rather than the 7th January!).

Then, as MGHS recommended, I simply selected the repair installation and everything is working again. Thanks!
