Cumbrian Caz~**~ Report 19 Jul 2008 17:23

We were out having a walk in the Oak woods above Coniston Water today. It was lovely and Abi was fascinated by it all. We looked at some tree bark and suddenly she screamed, I thought bark had got in her eye.

Her Dad then saw what looked like wasps or hornets coming out of the tree. One had got her right on the bridge of her nose. I know it sounds a bit daft, but I came over all ' casualty' and thought, what the heck do we do if she reacts badly to this and we are miles from anywhere?

Luckily she is ok, its badly swollen and has pushed her eyes to one side, and shes been crying a lot. What would you use to soothe it?

Caz poor little mite. The treatment will differ. Bees and wasps need treating differently, I don't know about hornets. Have you looked it up on the net? Meanwhile have you got any calomine? Temporarily cool/cold water on a flannel may soothe it. If the swelling is bad and as it is near her eye you could phone out of ours or NHS direct for advise.

Thanks Ann,

We were going to take her to casualty if it continued to get worse, we gave her a flannel and it helped. Going to look on the net now.

Vinegar is the stand-by treatment for wasp stings, but as it's so near her eyes it would be a good idea to seek medical advice.
I hope she's more comfortable soon. It must have been a nasty shock.

Caz

Years ago me and hubby stayed at mum and dads and in morning I got stung by wasp/bee (not sure which) right by the side of my eye, as there was a nest in eaves outside my room. I was ok til the evening and it started to swell and in morning couldnt get eye open.

Went to AE just to check nothing still in it and it cant remember if they gave me anything took a week of my eye not opening til about 2pm .

Might be worth a trip just to make sure shes not still got anything in it.

Give her a hug cos I know how painful it is
