Not got a very big garden. He had gone shopping and had a walk to the supermarket and had his wee dog with him.

Without wanting to sound wicked, you would have thought that the neighbours would have noticed the smell

Wouldn't the dog have led the searchers to him, or did something happen to that? Can't believe he was in the garden all the time and the dog didn't go to where he was, poor chap.

Is this the one Vicky? Seems he was the father of a senior police officer!

POLICE are investigating after a badly decomposed body of a man was found in bushes next to a housing development in Edinburgh.
Although the man has not been identified, it is suspected that he may be Alan Goulden, 64, a former RAF serviceman who lived in flats in South Maybury, where the body was found.

Mr Goulden, a diabetic and the father of a Lothian and Borders Police inspector, Graham Goulden, was last seen in late August and his disappearance prompted a major police search across Scotland.
Yesterday, the gardens of the flats where Mr Goulden lived with his partner were cordoned off as police investigators tried to establish the identity of the man and the cause of death.

The pest controller who found the body yesterday afternoon said it was fully concealed by a dense patch of bushes several feet thick, which were growing right up against the wall of the flats.

Andrew Burns said: "I had been to visit a property when I noticed a smell. I said, 'I am going to have to check these bushes because it smells like there is something dead in there'.

"At first, I thought somebody had dragged a guy from Guy Fawkes night in there."

He said the body appeared to be badly decomposed. "Then I noticed a hand. The man looked like he was wearing overalls."

Mr Burns added: "It's quite unsettling. This was just 15ft away from one of the main roads in Edinburgh. But the body was well hidden and quite difficult to get to. It took me a lot of effort to crawl under there."

Police said yesterday that they were still investigating the cause of death and trying to confirm the identity of the dead man.

A police spokesman said: "At this time, the death is being treated as unexplained, and we currently have forensic officers and detectives carrying out investigations at the scene."

Commenting on a review of the force's missing-person inquiry, Bill Skelly, the temporary deputy chief constable of Lothian and Borders, said: "In accordance with established practice following such an incident, I have requested that an officer from Strathclyde Police is nominated to conduct a detailed review of the police operation."

Mr Goulden was last seen walking near his home on 30 August this year, at around 6:30am. The former RAF serviceman worked in a packaging plant in the city and lived in the South Maybury flats with his partner. His friends and family became increasingly concerned when he did not return home and a major police search – which included a poster campaign – was mounted to find him.

Later, police brought in divers to search the River Almond and comb Cramond Island, as well as specialist dogs to try to track down the missing man. Police inquiries also involved stopped hundreds of drivers in the west of Edinburgh.
