Finally heard my son and his family are safe - the fires were only a couple of mile from them.

Son now heading to work - will be there for the duration as he deals with keeping the lines of communications open for the emergency services in Victoria.

Hoping and praying all are safe and the death toll doesnt rise further

GirlFromOz Report 8 Feb 2009 20:28

Update 7.26am
Death toll 108, 80 people in hospital with serious burns, some critical. 750 homes lost, some country towns completely devastated. Fires still burning, it's heartbreaking to watch the reports on TV.

Praying that Mick and his family are ok.

YES JEAN. THE FIREFIGHTERS PUT THEIR LIVES AT RISK TRYING TO SAVE PEOPLE, THEIR HOMES, AND THE WILDLIFE.

ALL BECAUSE OF SOME IDIOTS WHO THINK IT'S FUNNY TO START A FIRE.

Jean (Monmouth) Report 8 Feb 2009 19:11

Having once seen a heath fire spread many miles in a short time, I know exactly how horrifying this can be. My admiration is for the firefighters and all their hard work. How disheartening for them when they cannot save somone. Think of the frightened animals who have no escape. We can only wish a swift end for all.

Grabagran Report 8 Feb 2009 19:01

Mick, Hope you and your family are safe.

Have just realised how close my cousin is to the fires.

Hope her, her family, and all their neighbours are safe, and
pray the death toll doesn't rise.
