Now I am taking offence! I think the phrase 'bogs of Ireland' might just be a generalisation too far for me ...yes there are bogs, but there are also mountains, and woods, beaches and , believe it or not modern cities!

Thankyou and goodnight all, may your God or otherwise go with you...

PS if anyone wishes to pay for me to get my ass back to the bogs of Ireland , feel free ...I have relatives to find :))

Can we draw a line under this aspect of the discussion?

Janey posted something

SRS objected, and asked for it to be amended or removed

Janey did as asked

SRS then pointed out that I had erred in saying that Janey had not attacked anyone personally or upset anyone ..... when she felt she had herself been attacked.

I thought the offense caused by the words and/or capitalization had been sorted yesterday.

now it is in danger of becoming a major distraction again.

The expression in question means exactly the same thing as "for Pete's sake", just as "damn" means exactly the same thing as "darn" and "oh my god" means exactly the same thing as "oh my gosh". One version is for delicate ears, one is for people who prefer more colour in their speech.

There is nothing "personal" about it. You were indeed the person with whom I was exasperated, but I did not insult you or call you names or issue orders to you.

I did as you asked and amended the post virtually as soon as you asked because your persistent references to it were disrupting the discussion. So yes, you are harping on it. And representing it as something it never was in the first place.

Had no one else used strong/colourful language or spoken emphatically n this discussion, you might have a point. And you wouldn't be simply padding the false allegations made by GreenPenMan.

Had Mr. Man contributed anything to this discussion that was on topic, or addressed any complaint to any poster who did genuinely use offensive language and engage in personal attacks, his allegations wouldn't need any padding, of course.

with ref to SRS :))

I can assure Janey et al that SRS has on occasion asked me ( and others) to modify my use of the FFS and its non-abbreviated form ...which I am always happy to do if it offends...we all have words and phrases that we have been brought up to find offensive...I have one or two myself :))

Janey,

I don't see why I have to justify what I do or say on other threads but yes I do voice my opinion when I consider people talk to each other inconsiderately but perhaps you haven't seen me do that in the same way I have no idea what you mean by your thread about gold buyers. Obviously I don't seek out your threads in the same way I don't seek out bad language on threads and make a count of how many times it is used.

It obviously did feel very personal as it was directed at me rather than anyone else hence I mentioned it. I am not "harping" and dislike that term as I think it is a put down. I only felt compelled to say when it was brought up several times how you haven't said anything personal on this thread whereas I obviously feel differently.

Also, I would have said the same thing to anyone that used that expression at me whilst on the boards or "in real life". It genuinely did upset me and I'm not just saying this to have a go at you.

Just to "prove to you" that I do direct people to delete their offensive posts:
(well actually I asked her to amend it but I hope you get the gist)

I didn't know whether to be insulted by being called a DJ, a parrot or even a Liverpudlian!

Luckily I have the same sense of humour as a Liverpudlian!

Should have, after living there for 5 years!

so I guess the choice is parrot or DJ

SRS

The expression "ffs" is in common use at this site. Do you get upset only when it is me using it to express my **exasperation** at something you have said about me?

I have just done a board search for "ffs", and find 22 pages of threads (approx 22x15) in which it appears. *One* of them, I believe, was a use by me, referring to the horrible practices of gold buyers currently advertising for desperate people's wedding rings. Were you in none of those threads? Or does it not matter when it's said to someone else / by someone else?

Did you get upset at the things I was called and told I should do? Did you direct the individuals in question to delete their genuinely offensive words? Perhaps you did; I don't recall expressly.

That you would continue to harp on this, after I altered my post, and explained that I have used capitals for emphasis because there is no other way of indicating emphasis at this site, well.

Meanwhile, Mr. Man's fan club is filling my inbox. Haha, no. My inbox is filling, though!

Oops, I didn't mean to parrot everything you said, Sylvia! You just posted first. ;)

SRS

I am sorry if you felt threatened

FFS is quite a common phrase over here, expressing exasperation with somebody or something. I've even been known to use it myself ........... especially when I had a teenager at home!

Plus, as I think Janey said at the time ................... there is no way on GR to emphasise a word other than by using capitals, there is no way of using bold face or italics.

And using capitals is by definition shouting in internet language.

But if you want to emphasise a word on GR, what do you do?

I honestly believe that Janey was not shouting at you ...... I believe what she said at the time.

and maybe you were being a wee bit too sensitive about that.

and yes, we have just fed into GPM's belief that Janey is to be got rid of from these boards!

sylvia

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 15 Nov 2009 23:09

hahaha

quite the comedian aren't you GPM?

and we always know what Liverpudlians are like don't we?!

If you are in fact trying to infer that I parrot what Janey says, then you really should pay more attention

My very first posting on this thread pointed out that I do not agree with Janey on every thing she says, but I do defend her right to be able to have her say without being maliciously attacked by anyone.

as I will defend the right of ANYONE to have their say

If you are referring to comments made today, inferring that I am just parroting what Janey has said about you ................. well, I have eyes to see and can very plainly see what you are

After all, you have threatened me haven't you?

Don't worry ..... I never change my name, so you will always know who I am.

And I have noted your identification, so I will always know who you are!

I'm only sorry that my first venture into a discussion on this board has resulted in an encounter with you.

I wish never to repeat the experience!

Sylvia in Canada,

We used to have a DJ in Liverpool who had a saying "I used to be a Parrot but I'm alright now"

Take care

Sylvia :)

I wasn't going to bring this up again but feel that I have to say that yesterday I did feel shouted down by Janey and I have not brought myself to participate on this thread today for that reason. Perhaps I am being over sensitive but I was genuinely upset when she "shouted" at me and used the term FFS. Maybe this is part of her everyday language when she gets exasperated but I am not used to anyone addressing me in this manner. I honestly was enjoying the debate with her until this point as I thought it became too personal. To her credit, she did delete this remark when I asked. However, I did feel belittled by her comments which she probably will successfully argue reflects on me rather than her. However, this is just the way I feel.

However, it doesn't excuse anyone using bad language and personal remarks against her though & I did ask for one individual to amend her remarks about Janey on this thread.

I do feel that this thread has diverted from the issue in hand and onto Janey instead (and admittedly my post doesn't help matters either).

Interesting

I too have read this thread through from beginning to end .............. more than once in fact ..... and I really do not see anywhere anything that would merit the statement

"My entire purpose is not to have the thread deleted but to allow other members to make their point of view, without being shouted down, insulted or dismissed as idiots.

Other people have the right to express their opinions too, even if they appear wrong, they do not deserve to be shouted down all the time"

As this is I believe the first time that I have taken part in a discussion on these boards then I also do not see the merit of this statement

"I'm not sure whether it is correct, and indeed I hope it isn't but is seems whenever there is a discussion involving our Canadian friends, there always seems to be tension, in that they are always right and everyone else is wrong."

and finally, I consider that this last two statements are worthy of consideration for the future behaviour of the person who made them!

"Please step back a bit - even if you don't like it there are times when you need to say ok, perhaps the person has a point which is worth of consideration.

Perhaps then we can all get on a bit better without having a go at each other all the time."

I do consider that the continual reporting of other people's postings and comments to the "authorities" as abusive to be the easy way out

..... saves a whole lot of debate and discussion doesn't it?!

JaneyCanuck Report 15 Nov 2009 22:29

Awwww.

I'm outraged at lots of things too.

Since I'm outraged at the invasion and occupation of Iraq, should I report the posts of everyone in this thread who supports that action?

I'm confused. People are outraged at things said in this thread. So?

Are you meaning to say that there are things said in this thread that violate the rules of the site?

Well, yes, of course there are. I was called a bitch. In capital letters no less! And I was called a number of other things. I didn't report any of them. Just don't really care. People's words speak about them, not me.

So where are we here? Were there things in this thread that you reported before started reporting me and others for stating the obvious truth: you are stalking me and making false allegatins against me?

Did you report the post in which I was called a bitch? How about the one where someone expressed the hope I would be deleted? the desire to slap me? any of the multiple other insults lobbed my way?

Or did you conveniently stand on the sidelines and choose your moment to jump in and level your own false allegations against me, and decide that my truthful and accurate characterization of your behaviour was the chance you were looking for to squelch the discussion in this thread?

Do you really have a cheering section, and are they just too humble to take credit in the thread here for the sentiments you attribute to them?

So many questions.

AnninGlos

AnninGlos Report 15 Nov 2009 22:24

Presumably they have posted to make their point then. But, as Janey has said, you have posted nothing relevant to this thread, all you have contributed is a direct attack on Janey and her Canadian fellow country men/women, not very helpful really.

InspectorGreenPen

InspectorGreenPen Report 15 Nov 2009 22:21

Oh yes, I have read the thread from start to finish. Believe me, there are a lot of members on here who are outraged with the responses they have seen posted.

GPM, I made my point of view on Janey's original topic very very clear....and even had I felt I was being 'shouted down' ( I didn't) it would have made no difference...I would have kept on making my point ad infinitum if I felt so inclined.... ( and I often do) .

I am an adult after all ( most of the time) and can stand up to disagreement , if I am 'right' I am right, and no amount of shouting down will deter me!.

AnninGlos

AnninGlos Report 15 Nov 2009 22:13
