Dubai court annuls marriage to 'bearded lady'

The envoy discovered the deception on lifting the woman's veil to kiss her
An Arab country's ambassador to Dubai has had his marriage contract annulled after discovering the bride was cross-eyed and had facial hair.

The woman had worn an Islamic veil, known as the niqab, on the few occasions the couple had met.

The envoy, who has not been identified, told a Sharia court her mother had tricked him by showing him pictures of the bride's sister, Gulf News reported.

He only discovered the deception when he lifted the woman's veil to kiss her.

The court had annulled the marriage contract but rejected a $130,000 (£83,000) compensation claim for gifts he had bought his intended, the report said.

If he could afford £83,000 in gifts he could have paid for laser treatment and eye surgery. I assume she had something going for her personaility wise or else he wouldn't have gone as far as marrying the poor woman.

I read about this in the daily newspaper.

As with all arranged marriages, I am on the ignorant side. I did, however, believe that those involved in such marriages had met one another a few times, prior to marrying.

This article, seems to imply that the bride wore her ceremonial veil, ( cannot remember it's name), each time that the couple met, prior to the actual marriage. Would there not have been at least one occasion, even with a chaperone, that the bride would have been able to reveal her face to her future husband?

Seems to me, that this lady was concealing her appearance, for the wrong reasons.

If this is the case, I can see just cause , why her husband has had marriage annulled.

lol @ Joy

As I understand it the woman would only be allowed to reveal her features in her own home and fully to female members of her family. Hubby would only get a look once they were married. After that hubby would have the final decision as to which men in his and her family could see her face.

Don't they have razors in Dubai??

Was the woman retarded as well??

Uggers

Uggers Report 11 Feb 2010 20:46

That's so sad, Stray but then I bet most murders of spouses are committed in marriages that weren't arranged and that's even sadder:) Our friends' marriage was arranged and that's worked brilliantly.

Are razors good for boss eyes then, Annina?

I'm sure that a lot of arranged marriages work out Uggers, however I think it's particularly sad in the case Stray mentioned, that the marriage was against her wishes. Surely that should not happen in this day and age.

Easy to disguise cross eyes, just look demurely at the floor, when all is revealed. Once the lights are out in the bedroom it wouldn't matter, and she would wear her veil thingy the rest of the time.

Come on ladies, we are all masters at hiding what we don't want our ever-lovings to see. After 25 yrs, my OH still hasn't noticed the mole on my bum.

Am I allowed to say bum??

Of course it shouldn't, SRS.

It's highly unlikely the woman would have revealed her face to him before marriage (although that is starting to change now, with the younger generation, but that's a whole other story). Strictly speaking, in Sharia law, NO man is allowed to see a woman's face (once she is past puberty) except for those men the woman cannot marry - father, brother, son. And of course, once she is married, her husband comes into this category.
These men - father, brother, son, husband - are also the only males allowed to go anywhere with her, and would escort her when out of the house. They are what's known as a Mahram (chaparone/minder).

However, just because this guy didn't like what he saw, once she removed her veil, isn't the point, I wouldn't think. I would expect he probably won his case because he was actually conned into marrying her - by being told she was her sister!!

Oh hang on a sec, I've just got to the bit where it says he was an Arab country's Ambassador to Dubai. Ah well there we are, people in high up places tend to be able to do what they want.
