Hello. I am trying to find out why my great grandmother changed her christian name from Christina to Amy.It may be because she was born illegitamly.I have her birth cert stating she was called Christina and her mother was Sarah Ann Broadhurst but there is no fathers name.I checked birth records and they confirmed that a child called Christina was born on 10/10/1868.However,my nans[her daughter],birth cert shows that her mother was Amy Anderson[formerly Hayward].I do remember my nan saying her mothers name was really Christina but she did't say why it was changed. Before confirming any further details i need to find out this information.Have you any idea how i can find this out.Relatives that are still alive can't help me answer this. Thanks

Cant see how you would find out You can call yourself any name as long as its not to defraud. Maybe she preferred the name name Amy so became known as that .

My MIL was reg as Patricia but was always known as Ellie. I thought her name was Ellen! It was only when she died and we got a copy of her death cert that I found she was really a Patricia, which the informant had known.

Where does the names Hayward fit in if her mum was Broadhurst and Amy/Christina was illegitimate

Kay????

Kay???? Report 17 Jan 2012 21:59

Surely her former /formally name would have been Broadhurst,,,,,,,

Hayward???where did this come from?

what did she marry as? Amy or Christina?

Firstly, are you sure you are following the right line? If on your Nan's BC she is named Anderson formerly Hayward, she must have been married to a Mr Hayward or living with him to gain that name. So have you found a Hayward/Broadhurst marriage? Or did she take a stepfather's name?

As to Christina to Amy. Perhaps she didn't like the name? Or if she was in Service, may be the Mistress thought that Amy was more suitable for a servant.

when did she marry Mr Anderson . What year was gran born ?

Seems you may have the wrong birth cert . Remember before 1875 lots of births weren't registered

Well there is a Christina Broadhurst b reg. Dec 1868 in Dudley also a Sarah Ann Broadburst marr. possibly Edward Hale in Dudley reg Dec 1871

Have tried the Parish Records? You cannot change the names you are baptised with.

you haven't given any dates or area other than the birth date for a Christina

Wonder if this is her mum who married and she took her step fathers name.

BROADHURST Sarah Ann Dudley 6c 190 >>>
DOWNES Joseph Dudley 6c 190
HAYWARD George Dudley 6c 190 >>>>

As Shirley says there is the marriage in 1875 to a Hayward - looks as if from then or she is known by her stepfather's name.

PM recd from Karen I have advised she should reply on the thread so other helpers see any info

"
The surname Hayward was written in brackets under Sarah Broadhurst, mother of Christina"

So would seem her mum married Mr Hayward and she took his surname.

So Christiana lived with her grandparents after her mum married, Still wonder who she gave as her dad when she married Mr Anderson.

Your grans birth cert will give her dads name which will help look for the marriage if you haven't already got it .

Some more info from you .on here please, would help :-D
