Julia Report 8 Apr 2012 14:41

Joy, the OH put in 56 seeds down the allotment about a month ago, and all but 1 have germinated. I will be knee deep in them, when it is picking time. Set my tomato seeds in kitchen window sill, about 24th March, and they are over an inch high, and ready to produce their first pair of true leaves.
Aint it nice when you start to see seeds come through.

K Report 4 Apr 2012 12:33

I would protect them all if you can. I have been taking tender perennials in and out all week.

Sadly our outside blossom on the damsons, peach and pears will probably be affected by this cold. They are flowering too early due to the previous weather.

The Peach tree def' get under cover.sooner the better ,but the lilly may be okay if you want to chance it.don't know how big height wise your tunnel is.
My old poly tunnel was 8 ft high 12 ft wide and 14 ft long ,just the job for my show leeks, but here i just have the usual back garden greenhouse ,so i had to buy fleece bags to cover the Nectarine tree with.
You make sure you don't over do it mind ,or the coming op' will be a real chore getting over ,and you will lose a lot of growing time :-|.Fred :-D.

I think you should give them some protection Lorraine, at night it is very cold, if you can get them into the tunnel it would be a help.

L K P [new designation] for Puss ,lol t'other one is wearing my finger ends out.the snow me duck has already arrived up here ,so it's as well we went to do the weeks shopping early this week,by the time we finished in Cramlington with A*da ,and the other shop Wil*ins*ons for the seeds and weedkiller ,it was spitting on with rain ,and by the time we were back on our Patch ,finished the food shopping in Morrisons, and gone into Frydays for our fish and chips ,it was starting to snow he he ,so by the time we had eaten ,finished our cuppa ,and opened the door ,the flakes were getting bigger and heavier.
no matter ,we are home ,the unpacking done and intend staying indoors until at least tomorrow morning.
Found four nice herb plants for the urn ,and they are now in the greenhouse until the weather clears :-).
Sending you some snow down Lesley ,lol, don't bother thanking me ,we have plenty to spare :-D xx.Fred.

Yeah sounds about right ,silly puss has got my wife sniffing round ours now for lavvy smells he he i am using two different coloured ones ,intemingled to hide the end of the garden shed to great effect sniff ,,chortle .
Kitchen roll is best for tomato seed drying because it soaks up the fluid quicker and prevents seeds rotting before they dry.leave them in warm sunny conditions for a week and then pick them off with your thumbnail.
i have kept seeds using this method for two years and still found the strike rate to be very high :-).
My poor little Nectarine is shivering on the path out back covered with two fleece bags against the frost and snow ,cause there is now no room to slide it back in the greenhouse :-( plurry weather ,Fred. :-0

Diamonds-R-A-Girls-Best-Friend Report 2 Apr 2012 14:33

Fred you said you dry your tomato seeds what is the best way of doing this please, I would leave them to dry out on a saucer then when completely dry store them in a brown paper bag or do you advice a different way.
Thank you
:-D
