Estelle Report 20 Jul 2012 15:53

Sandie and Barry - I will speak to Phil our lead developer and see if we change it back to how it was for you, so that when you delete a post from a thread it then goes from my threads.
David - I am sorry but we will not be restoring the old tree. We have got lots of things planned for the new tree, and by retiring the old tree this allows our team to work on the new one. If there's anything you think we should have in the new tree then please do let us know.
We really are listening to what you all say. I am sure you all undertand that we can't act on every single suggestion sent in to us, but your feedback is really important.
Kind regards,
Estelle

Estelle, I & many others have emailed GR several times re the NON deletion of threads & posts problem,we have been told time & time again the messages have been passed on to those who are supposed to be able to fix it but NOTHING has been done!!

IF it's that "simple" to be able to change it back for Sandie & Barry then why not for the rest of us that wish to continue with the deletion facility??

Estelle, the threads staying or not staying in my threads was posted about in the suggestions board by a member in March:
http://www.genesreunited.co.za/boards.page/board/suggestions/thread/1295933

You will see that one response from GR was:

Thanks for your email and bring this to our attention.

If you have added to a post on the message boards and then you delete it after, you will still have it listed under My threads.

I have reported this to our technical team as I agree, that when you delete yourself off a thread this should then be removed from your My Thread.

I hope this helps and please tell us if you need any further assistance.

I agree bring back the old tree. It is far better than the new one which I find completely annoying to use.
I will not be renewing my membership when it runs out.

I have had this thread deteting thing for months now. wondering how it was excellent then suddenly we had major problems with trying to delete the threads we had replied too.
I was even asked to send a list of the threads that had remained after I had deleted, which I did a long long list.

I did with hope that it would get sorted. after waiting for ages I sent another email and was told it is in hand not sorted yet. then another email and the same answer. I fail to see how the programmer can alter the tree system and lose control of many things in the process..
All the years I have been a memeber I have never seen so many unhappy people. and trying to find how to get things put right.

I lost the small pictures when you log on that appear at the start they were sorted and then vanished again so they are no longer there. but the iorny of it is the little wheel still turns asking you to "PLEASE WAIT " your suppose to wait before going onto the site you wanted. if you wait for the wheel to give you the go ahead sorry, your wait forever. I have left it spinning for an hour and it is still telling you to wait.

surely GR must have someone who can sort these problems out.? I notice your getting all the feed back from us. but you seem to be the only one to come on and face the music.

Hi All,
I went on the "New Tree" yesterday and all it does is give me up to my parents and then lines for all the others on my tree. What does that help me?
I might be doing something wrong,but I don't think I am!
Also when one tries to add a person on the new tree it goes all funny, takes people of and adds and leaves this person on own when you have added to as part of family! Who knows it might just be me!!!!! :-(

I wish GR would put up a poll and ask paying members to decide which was the better tree. Don't suppose they will though.
I'm afraid like others I will probably not bother to renew membership next time it's due.
I have tried to work with the new one on several occasions but got nowhere and find it too confusing :-S :-S :-S

I can't complain about the new tree, but I haven't tried to add anything yet, I did delete my , hubby's, sis and bil's names cos I wasn't sure they'd be hidden....cos I can't now check sis tree to see that they are to her and other peeps. Not worried about sis seeing the names but it was check that no one else could. !
I am peeved that I am no longer see peeps trees who have allowed me to do so, and I have allowed them to see mine.

I just tried to send this feedback to GR and got the error page too!!

"Absolutely detest it and wish I hadn't got my tree on here now. I prefer the old tree as this is a big step backwards. I haven't used it until you gave me no choice and these are the things I don't like already!!!

1. It doesn't work properly. If I try to do a search for someone in my tree, it comes up with names, but if I click on any it takes me back to the start page of my tree and minimises the page as well. So for now I CAN'T DO SEARCHES ON MY TREE.

2. If I 'click here' for help using the tree builder, why does it minimise the page? I thought it just wasn't working at first.

3. The Tree Dashboard needs to open so that you can scroll down and SEE that there are other pages.

4. Why, oh why did anyone think that it was a good idea to hide photos and details of a rellie on other pages? I like as much info as possible on them as soon as I click on their name.......just how it used to be on the old tree. Do you realise how slow things operate when many people use the site? The less faffing and clicking on things the better. Saves having to make seperate notes of the details as well.

It would appear that the software writers don't do FH. It was no good just seeking feedback of what people want was it? You needed to have also asked what people liked about the old tree as well and kept those things.

I don't know how you hope to attract new members with this, more likely to drive existing members away. Ancestry must be rubbing their hands with delight at the prospect."

If I try to contact GR using the "help" (on the toolbar) I get a generic response.

That gives me reason to believe that anyone using that link gets the same response.

SO WHY BOTHER HAVING IT????

If I contact GR I do so by email. Lately I've been getting some answers, but not answering my questions!!!

I've had a "play" with the new tree. Don't like it at all, very close to hating it. I clicked on one person, little box said theire were two tree matches, had a look, and got the message that there were NO tree matches!!

Working as expected.

I do realise the old tree was on its way out, but the new tree is not liked by the MAJORITY of members.

As for viewing other trees ~ I now have 75 pages of them, and have to go from page to page to find names.

GR still haven't done anything about the surname of the person who owns the trees. I have access to 31 trees belonging to Margarets. The tree list shows one surname, and the list you get when you search has another. Very frustrating.

I have asked GR why they stopped listing MIDDLE names on the searches. I still haven't received an answer. That made it so much easier to find people (especially with my lot of SMITHS, most of them had unusual middle names).

Arrrrrrrrrrrgh. What's the point of this? They don't take any notice of us anyway.

I'll stop ranting, before my blood pressure goes through the roof.

Annx, do you mean to say my photos are hiding somewhere on another page? They used to be obvious with the old tree, but I havent noticed them with the latest. I hope the tree that GR are working on will have my photos etc back where they belong.

If your subs are still running please don't delete this thread David .

Tho you may not have had the answer you wanted, GR ..Estelle, seems to have hopefully acknowledged that can rectify another prob that lots of peeps are complaining about.
Hope you get on OK with whatever site you choose :)

Thanks

Having not logged on since before the 19 July - I was aghast to find that MY OLD TREE WAS NOW NOT EVEN AND OPTION.
Many moons ago - I wrote to Genes telling them of how aweful I found the new version and it did not work, IT STILL DOES NOT WORK. - Well I cannot get it to work even half as well as the old site.
I find it a nightmare to use- why every time you ask it to search or perform a simply task does it seem to need to download info. I cannot see easily those who I share Trees with , as with the old tree to just use dropdown and click to go into their trees - I cannot even see a way on my new tree screen to view those trees that have given permission - have they all gone or do I have to go into Messages /contacts everytime -and thats progress?!!!!
Great - they tell me that on each relation I can view possible contacts that may also have this relation in and of course how many cenus records it is likely to be in. How many of you can view the share contacts with as easily - AS IT WAS ON THE OLD SITE?

The old site was pleasing to view- easy to use- relaible and comfortable to sit and input onto hour after hour.

If this is progress then AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I will be seriously looking to other sites -
This new site is causing me STRESS and FRUSTRATION and despair
I work in Adult Mental Health - hobbies are good for you - this site must come with a Health Warning
"new site(s) can damage your tolerance levels when attempting to perform data tasks"

GENES - DO WHAT YOU DO BEST - Provide a NOT TOO Fancy site and try not to compete with Ancestry or Find My Past - your subscriptions were geared for the good type of service you provided in the past and generated a more community feel to your site - everyone communicating -sharing.

Losing custom from people who have been subscibing for years is not good - and new people will not be attracted into Genes because of a Tree design. Fees and research vehicles are what attracts new people and if your fees - are comparative to Ancestry - it will not be the Tree layout that will decide. :-(
