LETS PUT A STOP TO THE MOANS!
GIVE US BACK THE OLD SITE - WHAT WE HAVE SIGNED UP TO AND PAID FOR.
IT WAS GREAT, EASY AND NOT CONFUSING, ALMOST AS GOOD AS THE ANCESTRY.CO.UK WHICH WILL BE MY ALTERNATIVE CHOICE.
THE NEW GENES SITE IS JUST HOPELESS I HAVE YET TO USE IT WITH EASE AND GIVE UP WITHIN 15MINS - SCRAP IT.........

By looking at my updates on the messages drop down menu I was able to compare the number of tree updates by members who have shared therir trees with me (about 30) for the past few months.

The results:
August 57
July 120
June 193
May 211
April 113

If those figures are representative of the site as a whole then it would indicate that tree activity is perhaps as low as a third of what it was before the changes were made.

Hopefully August figures were low because of the holidays and Olympics but so far the figure for September is 0.

Of course this is like predicting the final seats in a general election from an exit poll at one polling station, but it would be interesting to know if other members have similar findingd.

When anything gives you more stress than pleasure it is time to take a break from it John, in the past on here I have found myself getting very depressed or more often so angry I have shaken with it, not good.

Take a break, and 'force' yourself not to get involved in stuff that riles you, lol like I have... if I just HAVE to comment I do so and then delete it unsent and go and watch tv while I calm down...I find more often than not, just the act of typing what I think without anyone else reading it is 'enough', just getting it out lol :-D

take care
Rose xx

Many thanks and much appreciated, Detective. But have tried to be stress free for last 10 years since I very nearly had a massive stroke (had 2 mini ones). And have been feeling some of same symptoms this last week or two.

I like dead people, but don't want to join them till I am at least 106 (in 2052) and have seen myself on C1951. :-D :-D

That’s a real shame John. Even those who hold differing views from you will miss the daily opportunity to cross swords. Just because you are having problems with your tree on this site, it doesn’t mean that you should give up subs to others.

Many people take a break from the boards/GR, to return when their personal circumstances improve. Hopefully you will be one of them.

Until then, take care.

JohnLovesHorlicks Report 5 Sep 2012 09:53

I have made a momentous decision this morning. I will stay on Genes, but have cancelled all my subs on other sites like A.. as at today and will not be doing any family history for at least 12 months.

Reason being that I get easily depressed, and have been feeling stressed and very tired over last 6 weeks. It will afffect my health if I continue sending 500 posts a months like I have in August.

I have quite enjoyed debating the merits of the new layout, the new tree, what is meant by poverty in our western world, Welsh genealogy research. And I think I have made a lot of new friends since I came on Community threads. And I will miss many of you - particularly those I didn't always see eye to eye with. :-D <3

Still no announcement or statistics.

My tree is over 23,000. That means I have entered an average of 250 new "relatives" a month over more than 8 years to old tree. And not one since it was finally removed over a month ago now. Not boasting, it has been a labour of love and a fact.

I notice that another lister with a 28,000 tree has said exactly the same. Dead stop when old tree was removed.

To counter this, one or two posts have said they like the new tree and have tried it out with two or three relatives and have had no problems. But I wonder if anyone is using the new tree to any significant level.

I guess they might be too busy putting new relatives on new tree to tell us. But I have this feeling that everything is slowing down considerably (tree building and community posts).

Hope we get some announcement very soon (perhaps after the Newcastle genealogy fair this weekend)

KenSE Much appreciated. But cannot get to any of these events at moment, unless they are very close to home. But it might be possible for people to meet them In Newcastle on Saturday and we might even get some idea about what (if anything) they are doing to address the support for Genes to develop our site (which is pretty universal and is very positive) and the criticisms of the new layout and the tree (which is officially negative and moaning).:-)

I like a moan, but I also have always liked Genes. I cannot get on with this new tree :-( :-(

John if you fancy going to Newcastle on Saturday you could talk to the Genes Team at the Newcastle Family History Fair.

Can I just support what Cynthiaj has kindly put. This is what I wrote 2 days ago on this very thread:

"Yes, Cynthia has started a thread already on "Suggestions". Not sure if you have all added your names, but I urge you to do so and give her support.

There are many threads that are anti new tree. This is not one of them. Plenty of differing views here. I seem to be getting most of the stick, for some reason.

I think one or two others have been far more vociferous than me. I think I have been one of the nicer critics of the new tree. "

And I give Cynthia my wholesome, wholehearted and, possibly, holy support. I am obviously using the boards more since I had to virtually abandon this new tree, so I indicated that I also would be staying with Genes, which was the question asked in that new thread.

John

deleting a post after a comment has been made re it ......... is not considered good form

I could probably remember most of it .............

I was actually quite flabbergasted by what you said, and did consider RR'ing it as "personally offensive"

Obviously you also had second thoughts, or you would not have deleted it!

When have I defended the new layout??? If you mean tree I do not use it....if you mean boards I do not like the whiteness and have said so, but do not feel I have to bang on about it all the time.

Thanks for saying you were losing the will to live reading a post of mine on suggestions....then deleting everything you posted after stirring it up.

Sue Sorry I deleted that post. It was extremely funny. One of my better shafts of wit. :-D :-D Not sure what Sylvia thought:-S

Rose Words of wisdom, methinks. Have suggested a form of words lower down the thread ( about 10am this morning). We all have to spin to a degree and keep the paymasters happy. Must go and make OH a cup of tea before beddy byes :-D :-D

Just back tracking through some of the last posts, John

"WHEN WILL GENES MAKE AN ANNOUNCEMENT THAT RECOGNISES THERE IS SOME UNHAPPINESS ABOUT NEW LAYOUT?" you mention this is the question which is most taxing you ...

and I think you must know the answer, as anyone who has ever worked for a firm that has a large 'parent company' knows......

when 'they' ALLOW the frontline staff to make a comment, carefully scripted in triplicate and minutely inspected, edited and approved by 'he who must be deferred to' :-D
