Honestly Sue, I am very much less calculating and much nicer than I seem to come across here. I can be a bit brusque, but I try to be kind - even to those who are having a go at me.

I do like controversy - but then so do many on these boards :-D But don't think I have actively sought controversy here. Now, as for my opinions on speed cameras......

Sue It is so sad when friends and rellies pass away. We can plan, and I think we should plan. But my leader said "live like the birds of the air" and he did just that.

I just feel we should try and make this world a slightly better place by doing our best whatever is thrown our way. Life is so short and transcient, and you realise that so clearly when you follow people's lives via censuses. You can almost guarantee when they will disappear from censuses sometimes.

I try to enjoy every day and be very thankful for whatever I get. And yes, I do enjoy a moan quite often too. :-D

You know exactly how you come across on this board John because it is calculated.

A visit from me is talked about for years. And it will really impress neighbours. How did you know that dashingly good looking and sophisticated gentleman, Sue, they will all ask. :-D ;-)

Hope I don't come across differently in this thread. Hope I don't appear cocky, arrogant, moany, irritable bowels :-( :-( :-( I am a cross between Cliff Richard and Elton John

I hope you do get to meet them John. I found a cousin here on GR and was delighted to meet him in England 3 years later. He sadly passed away 3 months before I was to meet up with him again last year.

Sylvia So lovely sometimes to wander off down these byeways, aint it.

My NZ relatives descend from someone who was a solicitor's clerk in 1881 census aged 19. Two year later he went by invitation to Lichfield Cathedral to hear the Bishop of Melanesia call for missionaries. Two months later he was ordained and was in Norfolk Island (where 50 years earlier the islanders had really enjoyed two earlier missionaries yum yum). So a brave man.

My Aus relatives started in Corowa in 1862. Govt were giving 1,000 acres free in the middle of nowhere and it was such a hard life for first 15 years. They built own farmhouse and helped to build Methodist chapel.

Have remained very close to both branches despite the years and the distance and I am longing to meet them all. Victoria BC cousin is an absolute poppet and I do hope I meet. her soon :-)

Definately agree with the 'wordy' bit, Sylvia.

"It is very sad about that epilepsy incident. But I think if the flock wallpaper was the trigger that Genes would have taken it off. They have reacted very quickly this time to suggestions that people could have migraine or worse from the new background."

different times, different owner

so far as I know there was NO reaction. There was no change made to the background.

John

you certainly have a "round the world" trip planned there!

I got sidetracked last night on following an url mentioned on a thread on GR for NZ information, and that led into google, etc, etc,etc

Trouble was ......... it was for the descendant of a sibling of an ancestor ................ and I normally don't go into too much detail for such distant rellies.

BUT .......... the journey she made with her new husband, his brother and new wife, and what they made of themselves in NZ was just so fascinating in general terms of social history.

I ended up googling places in Wellington!

As far as my good friend is concerned, you may say that. But I could not possibly comment :-D ;-)

"You appear very conceited and judgmental, and very wordy. I suspect that you are very insecure and feel you are not as good as other people."

This gave me a wonderful start to my day. I've had such a laugh and will - I'm sure - laugh every time I think of it through the day. Thank you :-) However you do not know our Sylvia well enough to make such a comment.

It is very sad about that epilepsy incident. But I think if the flock wallpaper was the trigger that Genes would have taken it off. They have reacted very quickly this time to suggestions that people could have migraine or worse from the new background.

We still know so little about causes of epileptic fits. What I have been surprised about is just how many suffer from fits at some time in their life. Even having their first ever fit well into retirement.

A big trigger seems to be tiredness and stress. And modern life makes us progressively more tired and stressed.

Yes, 2014 is my year for travel hopefully. Need to get photos, stories from my distant cousins who live in Victoria BC, Jo'burg, Melbourne, Corowa (Vic) and Hawkes Bay (NZ) so I am going to try and meet all those who have been rude to me on Genes and have a huge itinerary in mind. So important I enjoy a coffee with you, so I will plan my route when most convenient for you.

When you would most like me to be in Vancouver ;-) You will recognise me from my flowing red hair, a daffodil in my lapel and I shall have a leek. :-D

Jax I was being quite serious and friendly with you. Not quite so friendly with that other lady who got right up my nose. And Sylvia and I are reasonable towards each other most times - hence the winks now and again. But she has got a piece of cedar winging its way to my home in Pontypandy :-D ;-)

not at all insecure, and very proud of what I have achieved in my life, which is way more than a lot of people manage to do!

getting fed up of all the moans ....... just as you apparently did in 2007

as for the epileptic fit ........

............... I know only what HE posted on a thread ........... which was exactly what I posted above. He said that the fit happened within 5 -10 minutes of first looking at the new colouration. He returned to let us know why he was leaving, as he was a well-respected member

HE told us the effect that it would have on his future life.

Poor man was devastated ............... as one might imagine

It was not secret at the time.

Thus I have no intention of removing it.

So far as I know .......... GR had absolutely no reaction to the information. I do not know if he emailed them directly, or left it at posting to let us, his friends know.

It was after all just after ITV had taken over.

as for sounding conceited and judgemental ..................... pot calling kettle???

I don't believe I'm conceited ........................

NOWHERE have I said that I am a brilliant researcher .............

........... I said I had worked with many excellent and brilliant researchers on here ......... as all helpers work together.

I have said that your continually calling yourself a brilliant researcher sounds as though you think you are better than everyone else.

I did say on a post a few days ago that I am/was an excellent editor .............. it was my job, and I would never have earned the money I did if I did not produce the best work.

That is different ............ I have proof behind that statement

I do not EVER claim to be a brilliant researcher ............ because I don't think I am!!

I am a GOOD researcher ................... having based my ability in researching family history for the last 10 years on 40 previous years of scientific research in libraries and on the web.

The same talents are used in both ............... knowing where to look, how to look, and how to jump out of the box. And knowing that one needs to do a thorough job of the researching.

judgemental ............ maybe!

Nice, polite and caring ......... definitely :-D :-D

2014 eh ................ depends on when you come. We're have a lot of travelling already planned for that year!

John

Why is it with your posts, that it is difficult to work out whether you are being serious or not

Not everyone shares your sense of humour

supercrutch

supercrutch Report 23 Sep 2012 21:54

It wasn't just an epi that was reported but lots of migraines were triggered too. Added to the bad experiences suffered by GR members with eye problems there was an overwhelming outcry to retone the colours.

I was one who complained by the way.

Perhaps you missed the said post, if so, why go into accusatory mode? Plenty of us saw it and wouldn't have dreamt of questioning the truth of it.

JohnLovesHorlicks

JohnLovesHorlicks Report 23 Sep 2012 21:48

Epileptic fits are very distressing. Do you know that a screen background caused his fit? Did Genes accept this? Unless you can prove that, I suggest you remove remarks immediately.

As for your other points, pretty spiteful and unnecessary. What do you gain from that sort of cyberspace attack on somebody that you know nothing about.

You appear very conceited and judgmental, and very wordy. I suspect that you are very insecure and feel you are not as good as other people.

I may be a bad judge, but think you are very nice, very polite and very caring. And look forward to meeting you when I visit my cousin in Victoria in 2014. :-D

John ............... you posted

"Sorry Lynda. Just looked at joining date on Nov 2007 and 490 posts Don't feel superior or inferior anyway, just a bit touchy when people say I moan and have no interest in site improvements. I think they are moaning old **** , but have always been too polite to say.

I remember having a peep at a thread when the green flock wallpaper debate was at its height and could not believe the spitefulness and pettiness. And endless moans, and moans about moans. Have always found green restful, even when it looks like inside of a house of ill repute."

----------------------

Soooooooooooooooooo .........

what is different between then and now????

"endless moans, and moans about moans" in 2007 vs "endless moans, and moans about moans" in 2012??

one about wallpaper, and the other about the tree layout and its colour scheme

nowt different between then and now!

You liked the green .............

......... I think of the poor guy who HAD to leave GR at that time ........... that green caused him to have the first epileptic fit he'd had in 30 years ................

which meant that he had to give up his driving license

which meant he had to stop work.

............ I think of several members who found the green wallpaper gave them migraines, and they also HAD to leave the site. I see them on another site now.

YOU liked it, they obviously had problems with it!

I also liked the soft green on the boards and threads (but not the fuzzy wallpaper) .......... and complained about the change this time around.

I would still like the thread backgrounds to be a little darker than they are right now, but the current colour is one heck of a difference, and much better than the horrid staring white of August 2nd!

Yes, I complained and moaned about the colour ....... on threads and directly to GR

In fact ................ it was my first comment when I accepted the invitation sent via email to test run the Beta version.

You are now also saying that your tree is working reasonably for you, but you are still not going back to it.

Do you not think that this might be due much more to it's being time that you did other things, than to the new tree.

Do you not think that it is time to stop moaning?

Do you not think that it is time to stop promoting yourself, and saying what a brilliant researcher you are?

That is, after all, only making it obvious that you think the other members are not brilliant, and implies that you even think we are all hopeless.

After 9 years on GR, I've seen and worked with many brilliant researchers who have left me with mouth agape in wonderment at what they have found, and how they did it.

............. and how humble they were about their abilities to see beyond the wood of the trees.

And also, amazed at how clearly they could explain to other less experienced members how to repeat the searches so that others could also learn to expand their research capabilities.
