Good advice Tec!

Allan ~ persevere! Home grown ginger is SO much better than the old stuff in the shops!

When I get a ginger root I cut it into smallish pieces & keep it in a jar, covered with sherry (in the fridge).

Hello Allan,

You are unlikely to have any success trying to grow ginger in water :-0.

Look for pieces of ginger root with "eyes" or little "horns" showing if possible.

Plant the root in compost with good drainage, and place in a warm place. A sunny window sill is a good place - but not too hot.

Keep moist, but not wet.

I have done this several times - good luck.

Remember - patience is a virtue, and I know what a virtuous chap you are :-D.

Hope you are well,
Tec.

A few months ago I saw on a gardening programme how to grow ginger from a cutting of root placed in water (similar to how you can propogate an avocado).

The programme showed the mass of roots, and stems that had developed 'after two to three weeks' and the young plant could be transferred into the soil.

Suitably inspired, I tried the technique.

The first piece of root rotted!

Undeterred, I tried again.

Some twelve weeks later I have four roots breaking through, the longest of which is about 1/4 of an inch, and a couple of pimple like eruptions on the upper side of the root which could be shoots as they have taken on a green tinge.

Mind you when things go mouldy they also take on a green tinge!!

Talk about watching paint dry, or more in keeping with the gardening theme, watching grass grow :-| :-|
