why when i try to find some one in the ealier census they can,t be found but if i go to ancestry united they find them straight away with the same information ?

Do you mean you can't find them on Genes records? They could be mis-transcribed.

try putting in less information


try using the wild card * to stand in for some of the letters in the surname.

GR uses findmypast's (FMP's) transcribed census records

ancestry did its own transcriptions



different transcribers see things in different ways.

Have the name Sell in my tree

Have found them on different sites under the following transcribed names

Sell, Soll, Sall, Sale, Lell, Loll and many many more.

As said before you really do have to be creative.

If there is a someone with a slightly unusual name, you could try just the first name year of birth and place of birth, this is how I found my Sells as Lolls!

ie my g/g/grandmother was born in Mountnessing in Essex, but could not find the family at all on one census return, so all I entered was Sarah, her year and place of birth and up popped the whole family living in Holborn, with more extended family, deep joy I had found more ancestors than I was originally looking for....
