I don't envy him that though, but it will be worth it :-D

Possible a case of negligence Ann altho maybe years back there wasn't as much known about the problem. If it's caused your son so many problems, he will be glad to have it sorted out properly at last, hope he can get it dealt with quickly and things so smoothly for him afterwards.

Haven't coomented on this thread because, very fortunately, it is something I know nothing about.

But it has obviously caused great distress within your family over a very long period.

Very pleased he is getting over operation and they intend to get at root cause of these abscesses. And it does look like a merry Christmas for all :-D

well visited my son this afternoon - he's doing fine -and during the course of our conversaton he tells me that the surgeon who did the op, the same one who operated on him in May this year, says that in his opinion the problem is -

23 years ago my son had his first problem and then it was an ingrowing hair - surgeon is of the opinion that they did not track that hair through to it's source and left a piece there and that it what has been causing all these abscesses and hopefully the MRI scan will prove this - then they can get that offending piece of hair out and hey presto - no more probs - so fingers crossed

Well that's a result, an investigation :-D hopefully he'll get a definitive answer as to the cause.

well just had a surprising discussion with my daughter in law - apparently these abscesses are not caused by hairs at all - that appears to be the problem - they hav no idea what's causing them - baffling - so he is booked in for an MRI scan to see if they can fathom it out

Ann, I had one of these 35 years ago. I had the op and have never had it again.

Until I went to the doctors and mentioned it, when I didn't have an abcess, they hadn't realised exactly what it was!

Having ridden in train cabs myself, I bet it was the cause, as I was told that during the war when they used jeeps it happened a lot to the solders too!

The daily change of packing I found to be the worst part, but was told to sit in a warm bath beforehand to soften it up. I was in hospital 3 days but off work 6 weeks. You may want to buy him a childs rubber ring [used in swimming] as it will be painful to sit for a while

As long as the wound stays uninfected and heals well he should be fine now.Ann, hope he is soon feeling 100% well again.

I know someone whose son had the same thing but it didn't heal well at all and it took a long time to be right. Not sure if he looked after the wound properly tho.

My own son had a similar problem recently but after antibiotics and cream it seems to have cleared up, maybe because he caught it very early.

O.h.'s youngest son had the ame thing and had to have an op to get the hair out and clean the wound, but his healed well too and no more problems as far as we know (he's in the States now)

It seems to be a very common problem for men, maybe an exfoliating time when they bath will help prevent further problems.

thanks guys - I'm sure he'll be fine now and have a nice nurse to come in every day to pack it!!! still, if they didn't have to dig too deep it won't take much packing - fingers crossed

Glad it's over Ann, let's hope he is clear of them for a while.

BTW I know Ann quite well and I know she wouldn't post anything that she felt was too personal on the www.

Anyway it makes a change from her blasted toe :-P

My partner gets infected piles which I think must be something different.

They make him unwell until they burst.

Rather than keep getting anti-biotics he now sits in a bath of Epsom salts a few times until they burst and then hot brine afterwards.

Thats good Ann all over and done with.My oh had a ingrowing hair at the bottom of his spine 8 years ago.What a mess they made of him.He had his wound stitched up in a blanket stitch.He had to sleep on his stomach for a week.It then turned into a infection.Not nice but thankfully first and last so far.Hope its your sons last one

pleased to report that the op has been done and apparently he's sitting up in bed eating a tuna sandwich - first food of the day!!!

Ann says her son has a good sense of humour my son is much the same and wouldn't be phased at all by me talking about such at thing :-D :-D
