Maybe we will have another go one day but our first attempt was so eventful didn't go on.

OH's dad was born in a town in Yorkshire and we knew there were still some of the family still there. At the turn of the century,with his job going out for tender,he decided it might not be a bad idea to come off the stoves and start passing on his skills to others.Because he had always worked in whites he had few clothes suitable for work so we decided to have a few days looking around the discount outlets in the north and see if we could find any of his family.

The first day we did a couple of outlets and visited the town of the old man's birth, With half an idea of the family's area we asked a man if he knew any of them and he sent us to a pub where it seems they knew eveything. They didn't serve food so we had a packet of crisps and asked around.

One man evidently knew all about them and took OH aside to give him the details.Unfortunately he not only spoke very broad Yorkshire, he spoke as if he had some sort of deformity of the palate so the time they spent head to head in the corner yielded no discernable information at all.

Meanwhile, my time wasn't wasted. A pleasant man,hearing our southern accents,decided to tell me how he had had to leave the Oxfordshire village where he had lived. Apparently, after he had had a bit of a fling with a girl from the next village,she discovered she was pregnant and,as was the way in those days, they married. Devastatingly, neither she nor the child, survived labour and he was treated much as a murderer.

Both drained,and none the wiser, we left the pub and asked about a bit more and did, to our amazement we located his dad's cousin.

She was lovely and cooked us egg and chips which was most welcome and apologized for not being able to put us up.(How embarrassing that would have been!)

Having spent the night in a motel we decided we should give her a little present for her trouble. There were some chocolates we had bought as Christmas presents so we decided we would go back and give them to her.Neither of us could remember the address but were fairly confident we knew what the house looked like and the one in Victoria Street was it.

When I knocked there was no answer so I popped the chocolates through the letter box (we are not generous are we?).

Later,when I rang to thank her,I asked if she had found her chocolates. Well,no, she lived in Waterloo Street. Can you imagine the scene in Victoria Street that night? I hope there was no jealous husband there!

Sorry it's long-winded but that is the reason. We didn't feel up to any more of the same!

You have to remember that we are deep south.Way on down there man. We can understand broad Yorkshire and it is generally not too hard to work out what a person afflicted with a speech impediment is saying with a little paitence but the combination, delivered at some speed,was just too much.

Yes some people up here do talk very fast and even I have to have a keen ear to get everything they are saying...

When my mum, sister & I went to Suffolk to 'discover' that side of our family, I went into the shop next door to where my gg grandfather was killed (aged 93) by a German plane dropping it's bombs on his shop.

I was chatting to the elderly lady running the shop, when my mum walked in. Without a pause, the elderly lady said to my mum:
'My, you're a Baggott'!!!
Fortunately, that was the surname of gg grandad :-D
