there was a spy film that one of the operators used in his code.........

the crib was "the number that always comes back to itself"

9 was the key to finding the secret words hidden in ordinary messages

Just a bit of religious nonsense for you to contemplate.

Earth is the only planet NOT named after a God.

Does that mean Earth is a god forsaken place. :-S

As for the 9 times table you can do it on your fingers with ease.
If you haven't managed your 9 times table yet !

Both hands up
Bend left thumb down to represent 1 the remaining fingers and thumb equal 9
(i.e I x 9 =9)
Both hands back up
Bend left index finger down ,as to represent x2 count the finger(thumb in this case) on the left as 10 and count the remaining fingers to the left as 8
(i,e 2 x 9 = 18)
Both hands back up
Bend middle finger down to represent x3 ..you have 2 fingers to the left that now becomes 20 and 7 to the right
(i.e 3 x 9 =27)
and so it goes on :-)

same principle as Maggie says ,but quite easy for children to learn.

None of my teachers (and I went to 6 schools) knew about it - or weren't prepared to share it!!
Actually, when I was at Uni,(1990ish) no-one in the Education department knew it either!!

So if none of US knew that (about 9x table) , does that mean our teachers didn't know about it either, otherwise they surely would have taught it as a sort of mental crib sheet thing, you know, like Every Good Boy Deserves Favour or whatever it was, along with all those other little reminders.
Edit: just remembered Richard Of York Gave Battle In Vain was another :-)
