The horse "Good Friday" fell in the King George 1V Chase on Boxing Day 1899.

Not quite the answer my dear old dad used to give, but the same effect . He used to say Easter Monday was the race-horse and it was in 1938.

To bore you even further - he did us - every new years eve he would walk out the door to let the new year in and then announce that "every race-horse in the country is now a year older".

Well done Ann. thanks for the reply and humouring an old codger. Hope Maindy barracks is still there.

Christmas Day also fell on Boxing day in mmmm 1966 ?? in the National Hunt when he fell at the 1st fence.

Harry, Ann is right about Good Friday but I am not sure about Easter Monday.

Harry - I believe that from New Year's Day - any foal born on or after that day is already one year old. I could be wrong haven't checked with OH!

I thought August 1st was all horses birthday.

Just googled and found this:

All thoroughbreds have the same birthday so that their ages can be standardized for comparison because of the historical lack of records of actual birth days. Their birthdays are January 1st in the northern hemisphere and August 1st in the southern hemisphere. After the first time a horse is alive on August 1st it is considered a yearling. The next August 1st is it's 2nd birthday and it is considered 2 years old, even though it could conceivably be one year one day old.
