They have a full membership for £ 45 and assoc. for £ 30. It is good value if you have some understanding of mechanical & civil engineering and/or a strong interest in our UK engineering heritage.

They do quite a lot of "live" stuff, replicas etc. Great for kids who have progressed beyond x-box.

The Society also has a vast archive of papers which they are beginning to put on line. If any of your forebears was an engineer or your property is a Grand Designs makeover than you are sure to find something in the archive. If your ancestor was in McAlpine's fusiliers a good chance too!

If you like a day out on the local steam railway or visiting HMS Warrior, SS Great Britain, Iron Bridge then you will be at home with the NS. OTOH if you prefer Monsoon and Costa and there are no spanners, old rotring pens, log tables, theodolites or slide rules in yr house probably not.

For anybody unaware Newcomen was a Cornishman who invented the first practical steam engine for pumping water out of mines. It used low pressure steam which made it fairly safe but expensive to run.

I just wondered if anybody on here was a member and what they thought of it if they were.
