I am still puzzled as to what a Gedcom is. Is it just a list of people's names or does it do a tree. Also how would one upload a gedcom if it is just a list of names.
Sorry to appear vague bit this has bothered me for some time now.
Thanks to anyone who can answer in 'idiot's english'.

A gedcom is just a way to move the information typed in a family tree to another family tree
If you have your tree here on GR, you can export a gedcom file and save it on your computer
You cant open a gedcom file to read it, it is just computer gobbledy gook. You have to import it into another type of family tree software such as Family Tree maker or Legacy, before you can read it. Or upload it into the software on a site such as Ancestry or tribal pages etc.

So basically it is just the way to move anything you have typed on a family tree from one place to another, it won't include any photos though

Thanks for asking Phyll and Linda for answering as I wondered too. I thought I must have downloaded it wrongly when I saw the gobbledegook!

Linda explained it very well. Also, there is a thread on the genealogy chat board about GEDCOMs:

Happy hunting :)
