Uzzi, you have had so much to deal with of late, no wonder you are feeling the way you do. I am glad your o.h. looks after you and can just hope things work out ok on other fronts. Once you have finished sorting the house out, it will be another thing to strike off the list, just take one day at a time and try and have some time for yourself if you can.

love and hugs

when my Mum was near the end, no quality of life, uncommunicative, groaning in pain, incontinent, unaware of who we were or who she was, I used to sit with her and think - if I popped a pillow over her face it would all be over and she will be at peace, but I just couldn't do it - after she died I discovered that my son and my sister also had been having the same thoughts

Ginnie Mum´s life isn´t that bad she just is not happy and even when I get her with me she isn´t going to be happy. sadly she is now confined to a wheelchair and incontinent. Even when she has a good day I get nothing but complaints and tears.

Rose Mum is aware of being unhappy at the moment and although I am a believer of euthanasia I know that Mum doesn´t warrant it YET.

SueMaid I understand that even though I think more of my mutts than most humans after all they have no say in their lives.

Dermot I know there is nothing wrong with growing old after all I am as we all are. I think you have it right when you use the word DIGNITY. Mum used to be so proud of herself, always groomed, hair and nails done in fact she used to complain at me turning up non groomed. Now well I won´t go into it all but there is not a lot of dignity left.

It is a question I think about but if I am honest it came from a very difficult visit with Mum followed the next day by a very bad epileptic fit from my dog. I am drained and I don´t do winter well. It didn´t help that the major reason that mum threw a wobbly on me is because I am going back to the UK to sort HER mess out and I won´t take her with me. Nor did it help that she reverted to her nasty self over it all and when that didn´t work tried the emotional blackmail.

Would I opt for euthanasia for her .....probably not yet :-)

There is nothing wrong with growing old. There is a time to live & a time to die. In days gone by, doctors accepted that most people died of old age & patients must have dignity until the end.

Don't ask me to judge who are to live & who should die.

Because human life is more complex than the lives of our animals. We have all the legalities to consider.

It's a difficult one with dementia, because the person suffering may be actually not aware or 'unhappy'. Not always the case I know.

Generally speaking I am in favour of euthanasia in physical illnesses when the quality of life is diminished to a great extent and the sufferer has 'had enough' and is ( or has been) able to make a reasoned request for it when mental faculties are unaffected...just as I am in favour of it for animals who no longer have any quality of life.

Oh Uzzi, is life so bad for your mother already?
My mom had no quality of life in her final year, it is such a dreadful time for all concerned, my thoughts are with you. <3

If my dog had dementia instead of epilepsy I would be encouraged to put her down.

So why when mother has no life can I not put her down ?
