No you don't need to use a GEDCOM file. That only transfers text.

You should have a roots magic directory with subdirectories in it.

If it is not too large, transfer the whole of it and then you won't lose anything.

When you start Roots Magic on your new computer you just have to tell it where the the appropriate file is which is file type .rmgc

You will have to install the Rootsmagic or another genealogy program before importing the data into it.
But, as said by Sue, you can save the data onto your new computer as a gedcom first if you wish.

Hi Pat,

You should be able to download your tree as a gedcom file to a pen drive.

Import that gedcom into any family tree programme that utilises gedcoms.

You will be able to save the file on your desktop for opening later if you dont have a programme already installed.

Hi everyone

Have just bought a new computer and need to transfer my family tree thats on Rootsmagic onto it from my old computer that still works but internet connection isn't working.......Is there anyway I can transfer it onto pen disk and then onto new computer and do I have to install programme 1st................my tree is also on genes reunited but just like to have it on roots as well ......just don't want to spend hours hving to type everything from scratch .......any advice please
