Shed a tear or two when baby was put into his grandad's arms :-( ..........and also when I saw the sanatorium at the end. In the early fifties my best friend at school was a TB. patient and I used to visit with her mam.

I cannot quite understand how someone who was actually there (Merlin's post) can say that some people in the East End circa 1950's did not live in poverty, when the the tenements were a fact. Did she know the author? (My ex husband spend some of his childhood there with his mother.)

It is based on the memoirs of Jennifer Worth, the cases that stuck in her brain, which were the unusual ones.

The poverty experienced in 50's East End, London, is a fact. Not all the people coped well with this, those cases that the author writes about are some of those.

I enjoy watching this, some of the characters remind me of the families from the East End that came 'Hopping' in our village , when I was a child in the 50's.

I see from another forum that, shock horror, they had a type of pram on the programme that didn't exist until much later. from Kense post...21/01/2013

I havent seen the purple pram which I thought would be early 1970's however I did see the pram which the Grandmother brought on tic for her grandson as she had gained custody of both her grandchildren because of the fire, the pram which she brought was obviously an up todate one the silver cross kensington as you can tell by the lining inside the pram only a quick glance but even I saw it .....didnt change the story but just saying :-D

Kay????

No offence taken Barb. My OH was away for 6 months told me some of the exploits that his 'mates' got up to and some very funny stories. But did he or didn't he? He was only 26 when he went. I didn't ask. Probably not as he was quite shy then. :-)

Sorry Ann, have heard the expression many times and wrongly made a joke of it as the young daughter of the Captain was kept on board to keep the men "happy"

No offence intended :-) :-)

AnninGlos Report 21 Jan 2013 17:04

Haven't watched it yet. But the girl in every port wasn't so funny if you were a Naval wife, in the 50s/60s it was quite common for the men to be away for anything up to 2 years - a lot of ports!!!

'Emma' Report 21 Jan 2013 16:13

Won't tell you about it then :-( I felt so sorry for......

Barbs :-D :-D :-D not funny I know but the a girl
In every port did it for me.

I heard it was quite true to the book. :-)

BarbinSGlos Report 21 Jan 2013 15:54

I heard the story about the poor Captains daughter on the boat was true. If it was how awful for her.
Those sailors must have been the only ones that didn't need a girl in every port

Hi Emma I haven't seen the accident yet!

We haven't got sky, I wouldn't get a look in although so not so bad since the eldest took to the seven seas working on a well known cruise liner :-D

I've seen a bit of driving on ice round here. Glad my car is on the drive :-D

My parents lived in Plaistow Newham when I was born, but for some strange reason my mum went to Walthamstow to have me. I know they were young and not very well off, but I would hate to think they lived like that.
I know my mum watches it and will soon tell me if it is a bit far fetched

Sasha is an Ex. "Charlottes Harlet" (as she says they were called) she says its a load of Bunkum,it did,nt happen like that, the people were poor yes ,but not like they are portrayed on that show, they had some pride if not money.**M**.Ps. the East end was part of her area.
