Paphos was wonderful 30 years ago, hacking some Cypriot rent-a-wreck all the way from Larnaca. Now it has a busy and noisy airport, highrise hotels and not really the place to go. Unless of course you like wall to wall development in which case try Acapulco.

I used to work in Sunnyvale so have shared feelings about San Franciso. Pier39 is one of the worst tourist traps in the USA and that's saying something. For a holiday Santa Cruz, further down the coast is much better and it has a very decent golf course at Carmel on the other side of the bay. Fabulous beach. It would be difficult to go to Lake Tahoe at any time of the year and not be happy.

If you have the time and patience to visit Oz Singapore is well worth a stop over. It has marvelous restaurants, great shopping, a super zoo and sailing at Changhi. Oz is one good reason for hypersonic flight OR maybe a week by balloon. Anything but the 747.

The UK has lots and lots and lots of places which could be wonderful for a holiday but sadly are mostly mucked up with spec development and not very grand design conversions, urban grot ( signs, yellow lines and such ), jobsworths and the you-will-not-park zealots. The wide range of expensive awful cooking is another problem. I blame the tv cookery programs and the Home Office. It is difficult to find a wild place without the Clarksian 4WD nutters - they have even screwed up horse riding andf Snowdon.. Still, last summer we had some magical days in Essex at Mersea Island. Those of you who like Swallows & Amazons will know it as Secret Water. Hardly changed since I was a goss.

Ireland used to be so wonderful. Now when you survey the ruin brought about by the banking bubble and EU structural funds the only thing you can wish is to somehow reverse wind back to, say, 1985.

The place I'd like most to go is Maasai Mara in Kenya.

Wasn't going to post for a while, but these distractions are hard to ignore.
I've had some wonderful holidays, especially two Kenyan safaris and a marvellous tour to Eastern USA and Canada last year.
But.... the one I have to pick is LLoret De Mar in Spain, 1977, when I met my lovely second hubby - he was a holiday romance that worked out!

Mine has to be a camping holiday on Anglesey when my daughter was only a few weeks old. She had a colourful rattle thingy that was made out of cloth. I was holding it and she reached out for it - the first time she had ever done such a thing and one of the first genuine intelligent interactions. She didn't qualify at the Sorbonne until later that year.

I'm not a lover of holidays to be honest but I had always wanted to see the Grand Canyon. I have only flown on one occasion before and like MrDaff I would prefer to be at home. As they don't run day trips I had to psych myself up to get booked to fly to the west coast . Instead of Skeggy and dance competitions I managed to see Hollywood and instead of going on a fair ground ride I had a flight in a helicopter over the Grand Canyon. It sure was a long way down. From visiting an old wild west town to the Big Sur on the Pacific coast it was lovely but am I glad to be back home-Yup.-jl

There is no need to go abroad -- Scotland has everything!!!

My first overseas trip was in 1962, I was three.... My Mum took my younger sister and I to the UK to meet our relations for the first time, six weeks on the ship there, six weeks in the UK and then six weeks sail home again, and I don't remember a thing ;-). We went through both the Suez and Panama canals..

When I was about thirteen, I saved my own fare to fly to Australia to stay with an Uncle and Aunt. Loved it. The travel bug was ignited.

Took our children to the States in 1997. We drove around new England in the Fall. So so beautiful with the autumn colours. Loved New York too.

OH and I have had quite a few holidays, blowed if I can pick a favourite. Last year to the UK to meet new found family was wonderful. We both want to return.

OH works long long days, so a short hop across to Fiji or Cook Islands to do as little as possible is a treat. We both love Aitutaki. It is one of the Islands in the Cooks group. Nothing to do but relax, swim, snorkel, eat , drink. No shops !! Have a google, beautiful azure lagoon. If I remember correctly, the chap who ballooned around the world (his name escapes me), called the lagoon " another wonder of the world", from the air it would have looked stunning.

Any holiday is fun - love meeting people too.

Had quite e few good holidays at home and abroad but the best for me was when we went to South Africa. 1st to see my sister and her family who I had 'found' after 53yrs, then onto a saffari park to see my beloved 'ellies' finishing up in cape town.Beautiful country, beautiful people. A real holiday of a lifetime :-D :-D :-D :-D :-D :-D

Have only been abroad twice and didnt think much of it...My favourite holiday has to be the Scottish Highlands...Wonderful scenery and wildlife...We watched stags rutting at 4am in the middle of the road!!

Paula we hated it also - because there is no bird song - they shoot everything including protected and migrating birds.

Janet - we did ask guide why wildebeest were not scattering - because they know the lion is not hungry was the reply. We never saw a kill, nor did we wish to.

We had fantastic holidays when my husband was alive and visited so many countries it would be hard to pick out the best one. We liked to do long haul trips and have seen some amazing places with so many happy memories. Now OH and I have different holidays, since we have been together for the last five years we have been to Turkey, Canaries x 4 Gernamy, Spain and Cyprus we are going to Cyprus again this year all are special to me in their own way. The one place I did not like was Malta, people say you either love it or hate it, I am afraid I am with the latter.
