I hate it when anybody says 'different to' instead of different from. We dont say something is similar from another.

Writing 'to' when you mean 'too'.

Kay - we have UKTV which shows the 3 big soapies, Eggheads, Weakest Link a lot of comedies and a lot of the crime series. Then we have BBC Knowledge and the History channels which show a load of UK shows like Top Gear and Simon Sharma programs also Time Team etc. Our soapies are only a few weeks behind your episodes.

errr, Sharron, if an electrician turns up to our apartment in Cairo with THAT much equipment we consider ourselves darned lucky!!!
No word of a lie, the last chap who came to fix the toilet, called himself a plumber, had the sum total of a broken screwdriver and a wire coathanger.

Going back to journalists and reporters with insufficient language skills - I often wonder just how they got the job?

Kay????

Kay???? Report 23 Jan 2013 22:45

SueM ,,,,how much Uk TV do they show down there.?

Can't abide CJ on Eggheads either although I don't mind Daphne. I also find Judith annoying because she is such a snob.

Sharron

Sharron Report 23 Jan 2013 22:36

You wouldn't employ an electrician who (not that) turned up with a plastic spoon and a safety pin to rewire your house so why should a journalist without proper language skills expect to be employed?

When news reporters or presenters have a poor command of the English language I find it not only unutterably annoying, but unacceptable ....main reason is because, as Sharron mentioned above, is because it is their job to present and/or report, so English is the tool of their trade. If they can't get it right, then we're doomed

And while we're on the subject -

Aaarrrggghhhh.... drivers who do not indicate.

Parents, seemingly deaf ones, who cannot control their children and allow them to run amok in restaurants, letting them screech around the place unchecked.
The parents are left in peace to enjoy THEIR meal and have the joy of being able to hear THEMELVES speak! Unlike the other diners.

Don't know why but Daphne on Eggheads irritates me too, John, but not as much as CJ, can't even look at that smug git.

:-D

Nice to find kindred spirits.
I really dislike the word 'hate' and have just about eliminated from my vocabulary
. So here's my list of intense dislikes.
Folks on trains, or anywhere who continually sniff.
The way the 'f' word is in such common use.
people who say 'a hotel' instead of 'an hotel'
Hot flushes that woke you in the middle of the night
Food that is unnecessarily plastic wrapped
Parents who allow their children to remain seated on trains and buses when adults are standing
:-D :-D

Sharron

Sharron Report 23 Jan 2013 20:40

Sat instead of sitting. Not when people say or write it in conversation but when newspaper journalists get it wrong.

English is the tool of their trade FGS! They are paid to write properly.Which brings me topeople who tell their children to "talk proply".
