Something else to cram into the handbag/manbag.
Something else to be mugged for
Something else to not work properly (sister's and my 2 daughters' dont)
Somethng else to be doing, instead of either looking where you're going or talking to the person you're with
Something else to claim on the insurance when it falls to pieces at the slightest knock :-D

You'd never guess that I've still got my 6 year old pay as you go Nokia phone would you :-D
That thng has been crushed in the bottom of my very fluffy handbag, dropped, skidded across the floor etc.
The most I've had to do was shake it when, after being dropped, it gave me the message 'replace sim card' :-D

I have a camera for taking photo's.
A PC for the internet
A TV for watching programes.

When I go out, I tend to look where I'm going and talk to the people I'm with (unless they've got an ipad) then I don't bother going out with them again.

My youngest daughter has one which she bought herself when she was 15...she is now 16, she also has her own laptop and iphone 4 (which she bought on ebay as contract came with a blackberry)....she has now asked me if she can upgrade to an iphone 5 when contract expires....they cost £600 to buy, I would be terrified of being mugged if I had one

Not many people walk along with IPads like they do with IPods IPhones but I have seen it in Tenerife. We got ours because it is easier to carry on holiday and is like having a laptop with you. As with the IPhone, there are a lot of useful (to some) apps to download, the screen is larger than the IPhone and great for looking at photos, takes excellent photos although I find it quite a clumsy camera. But then I don't use my mobile camera either preferring a proper camera. You can also use it as an e reader.

I like my Ipad.

i bought one recently cost me £399 .Its like a mini PC and means I can sit with hubby in the evening rather than being upstairs in my study(smallest bedroom lol)

i have often been upstairs all evening doing look ups etc whilst he is downstairs all on his own

He has said he didn't mind but now he has memory problems and has falls i feel safer to be in the same room to keep an eye on him

Shirley, that's a good reason to have one.

However - how long will they last?

Heard a programme last month where they mentioned that Kindles were freezing and unrepearable. Those still under warranty (yes they were less than a year old) were replaced - but only with a 3 month warranty!!
An ex employee then came on and said they were 'programmed' to break after about 18months.

Ipads and tablets in general are very good if you do not want to sit at a table or sit with a laptop on your lap. In answer to your question what are they - they are like a laptop without a seperate screen and keyboard that is all - nothing magigal about them.

BUT if you want to do any research and this is your only access to the net then you will find it cumbersome as you need both hands to use it, so no quite note writing with one hand and using mouse or cursor with other. With a tablet you need one hand to hold it upright and the other to manouvre round the screen.

I think they are a great additional asset to the home computer as you can go anywhere with them, ideal if going to Kew or other research facilities. ;-)

Now I understand but still cannot fathom why my g.children need one when they have mobiles which sing, dance and drive a car! Must ask them when they visit.

Although you get internet access with phones, it is not unlimited....which I found out this month when daughter told me she owed me £6+.....I pay for the contract

An ipad will make a subsitute for a laptop, an iphone will not. The screen on the ipad is many times the size. I have a so called smart phone (not iphone) and the screen is far to small to view a webpage or map, watch a video or read a book. The ipad is ideal for this. It is portable enough to take around with me. If I think I am going to a security risk area, I don't take it, just take normal precauntions.

Chris
I'm sorry I didn't answer your question :-( :-( :-(

Both my son's have Ipads as well as all singing dancing phones but you can do so much more on an Ipad.

David Hockney used it for planning his latest pieces for his exhibition.

As regards mugging etc I guess it depends where you are. So many people on the underground are using Ipads and the latest phones everyday on their journeys to work.

I believe that there may be a new generation of tablets coming out in various sizes so I'll maybe wait a while. ;-) ;-) ;-)
Take care
Von

All this digital schmigital stuff, I can't keep up; i-pods, schmi-pods indeed.

I'm with Maggie on this one......I have an ancient Nokia mobile phone too.
I use it for phoning and texting and taking photos. Everyone laughs at it because it doesn't sing and dance or make the tea. My point is that it works and does just what I want.
I don't need games and fancy ring tones and more confusion :-S :-S

Grumpy old woman, Karen

P.S. Sorry Chris I didn't answer your question.
Too much money!! They don't know what to spend it on next LOL :-D :-D :-D

I can no longer use a mobile but OH has one which only makes and receives phone calls. He could not cope with anything more intricate dear love him. His is pay as you go and cost all of £14 about 6 years ago.

It is used primarily for him to keep in touch with me when he has to go out, immediate family members know his number but no one else.

Thank you all, I am wiser now.
