My husband kept one for my 9 weeks stay and some months later I read it.

I did also visit ICU and Rehab ward at least 3 times each. I took a bagful of biscuits on each occasion to each ward. ICU - first 2 occasions were OK I stayed out of view of any beds - the third - Sister coaxed me in but I began to shake and panic. Not me at all.

It is nice for ICU to see their patients when they have recovered as having fought for their lives they rarely see them after that, so the Ward Doctor asked my OH when I was leaving for Rehab Ward.

When my daughter was ICU the nurses always used to repeat the same information every time they tended to her, that was to tell her where she was and the day.

When i asked why this was, I was told that most people have no memory of being in there.

They also kept a day by day diary which each nurse wrote in, they also encouraged the family to write in it too. This was to be given to the patient when they were discharged.

I wonder if there is anyone on here that has received a diary such as this after leaving the hospital.

My friend spent a lot of time in there and she had many invites to return to see everything
she said he helpped her as she thought thingsin there were bigger than they were ........even the masks which are used to give oxygen!!
she thought it was well worth it

I too, after sometime in ICU (with pneumonia like Dizzi) was invited back after a general talk with several staff as to how I was recovering - didn't really want to but was glad I did, somehow got this into proportion.. Didn't recognise the place at first, of course I had hardly been out of bed and only seen it from a very limited angle! I think it must be a recognised routine to help people get over the experience.

Hi Dizzi, when OH had his accident and was in I.C.U. for a while he was also invited back as he was having a few problems and could not remember anything about his time in there, so we went back and they also gave him a copy of his notes so he could see everything they did to him while he was in there, really did help him. x
