Funny how you start a thread like this thinking "I am not expert at much" and probably people read the thread and think "I am not very expert either".

Then, bit by bit people say what they are good at - like darning, cleaning, typing, speaking in public, remembering faces and names, driving. And you realise that you are good yourself at one or two of those.

So hopefully thread is an encouragement that we are all better than we think :-D :-D

My Dad could never remember our names, he would go through them all, including cats and dogs and eventually ask " which one are you ? " it has become a bit of a family joke.

I must admit though, despite being able generally, to remember names, if youngest son or long lost dog were misbehaving they would often get called each others name.

So I would shout " get off the sofa George " or " pick all that Lego up off the floor Spot " they both would respond though to the wrong name ! M

Remembering names is a great skill. Went on a course once to learn that skill. Something to do with associating memorable things with that person. Must try using that skill again.

Not a skill that either me or my dad ever possessed naturally. He always used to call me David (name of my brother). And poor David was always referred to as Catweazle (my real name).

And I get my children mixed up too. Fortunately OH is Beth so when I say "Beth yw d'enw?" (What is your name?) it can also be a statement - "Beth is your name" :-D OH just thinks I have developed the Australian rise at the end of a sentence.

public speaking doesn't bother me I was an instructor In one of my areas of expertise and although classes where generally quite small between 10 and 30 people their where times when i was requires to give demonstrations to audiences up to around 1000 people

Speaking to large numbers doesn't faze me either. One you have stood in font of a few classes or taken an assembly or done staff training then you have got it cracked.

When my sister got married ( again ) last year, she asked if I would be one of her bridesmaids. Ha ha , along with my gorgeous 23 year old niece and my sisters yummy mummy friends. When I declined she told me that in that case I could do the father of the bride speech. Which I did, I just imagined that the 150 people all waiting for me to say or do something daft were all five or six years old. Worked a treat and they all laughed and cried at the correct times and I got a huge round of applause at the end.

Probably my best skill is remembering names.

Eeyore, what was that about Sue's blingy pazazzled crutch !!!???? M

public speaking does not phase me at all and when I worked at Freeman's cigar factory I regularly conducted tours around the place showing parties of interested people how the cigars were made - very enjoyable

SueMaid has just reminded me of a skill that I have - also public speaking. I am quite a shy person naturally but have had to take centre stage on occasions and I have got quite good at it.

Have not yet been able to do much without a detailed script, so have to learn those scripts off by heart to really do well. My piece de resistance was 18 months ago when only daughter got married. I had to perform the traditional speech with my OH (note aivlyS:-D), her best friend (now a senior educationalist in Wales) and OH's large family all very nervous that I would say the wrong things. My family has largely passed away now, and I think of my OH's family as being my family as well as her family these days.

Was on strict instructions not to take the p out of anyone or be too sarcastic. And it was just over 10 minutes unscripted. And the room fortunately (about 120) were with me from the start to the finish and it went really well. So quite surprised I have developed that skill - even though nervous as a kitten every time I have to go centre stage :-D :-D

I'm good at public speaking - a skill I found I had around 7 or 8 years ago. I can stand up in front of 400 people and not break a sweat. I don't even get butterflies in my tummy :-) I am also comfortable speaking to the media which I have had to do on occasion.

Mr Daff I was not being scornful at all and apologies if my comment came across as such - I was merely registering surprise at such a heavy mileage

I would like to be an expert dog agility trainer but alas have far to go before we qualify for crufts :-(

MrDaff Report 2 Feb 2013 23:57

@the Sheep ..... my normal working week (now) involves a drive of 120 miles a day. Work that out over 30 years before you cast scorn. When I lived in Germany a round trip to UK was over 1,000 miles - easy enough to clock up the mileage over the years.

Expertise - yes, I think the idea of the OP is sound, so far it certainly shows some have a 'degree' in 'sniping'. Sad really. Could have been, could still be, an interesting thread, if it's allowed to be.

I have areas of expertise, certainly, as most of you probably do - this in addition to decoration (as in crutches..), some of you produce absolutely wonderful 'scrapbook' material, home-made cards that, in my opinion, would sell for a fortune ((btw I know the owner of a very good, classy, card emporium if anyone is interested :-D ) etc etc.

As for me? Well .... should I tell? Hmmmmm....
;-)

Changed title. Hope that encourages those who are experts to admit to it. Bit over the top to say you are ultimate. Unless you can manoevre an HGV round Pembrokeshire. I get into trouble in my Smart Car :-D

Anybody got plans to be expert at something in future. I plan cooking, gardening and texting. Simple skills to some, but they have passed me by :-(
