Scozz I hope you are OK and safe. My best friend has been travelling across NZ since the end of Dec, she will be heading home in around two weeks. She has emailed me 2/3 times a week, last time she was going to visit Auckland harbour, however I have not heard from her since Monday, hoping she is not caught up in any storms. Take care Scozz

And they've had another earthquake (or massive aftershock) tonight - according to the NZ news site measuring 6.2, along with 40+ aftershocks from the first one.

The death toll stands at 9 but I have a feeling that is only the start as they can't get rescue equipment and personel to the most affected Island as the its airport is covered in debris from the tsunami

The Solomon Islands got hammered.

Not good there

In my ignorance, I thought Solomon Islands was old name of Vanuatu.

I have a friend who lives on Penama Island in Vanuatu. Although pleased he is not the Solomons, it does look perilously close to epicentre. Have sent him an email to check his family are ok.

Apparently there was a huge 8.0 earthquake on the Solomon Islands with, sadly, some fatalities

I didn't have the radio or tv on all day, so I wouldn't have heard anything. But I used the computer a few times, and saw nothing on the news page.

We can see the ocean from our place, but we're halfway up a hill. If there's a tsunami we might get our feet wet.

Thanks for the link Michelle, I'll have a look.

It's on the NZ Websites, the first I knew was seeing a promo for the 10.30 pm news show and them saying the alert for NZ had been lifted (don't live near the sea myself but we have plenty of coast here)

I've just googled it and there doesn't seem to be anything about - I also didn't see anything on the news.

did you know anything about it Sue?

I knew nothing until I saw the msn page, saying we were off alert!

Earthquake in the Solomon Islands, very bad there, caused a "small" ocean rise.

Not keen on a huge swimming pool in the backyard either :-0

East coast of Australia :-0

I didn't know we were on alert! :-S

Found out this afternoon that we're not.

We have an ocean view, but don't want a beachfront property

:-)
