Ancestry message warning

Not sure which board this is best on. This is from a message on facebook from an ex GR member who has agreed I can repost it on here.

For family history friends - I've just had a message via Ancestry.com from a man saying he was responding to my post. The message wasn't specific and included a couple of URLs but I didn't click on them because the wording was a bit odd, and I haven't posted anything on Ancestry.com (I use co.uk but I don't use the message boards). Just in case it's some kind of scam, please be careful what you're clicking on.

It seems to be from a site called History Book Corner and McAfee is querying the site (just querying it, not saying it's a virus)

it is an email to your private email address, not an Ancestry private message. It just refers to Ancestry, which makes me think that Ancestry may have been hacked to get our email addresses

Just be wary.

AnninGlos, ask your friend for a copy of the email content/text only,

Then Google it, If it's a scam it will probably be logged as such

She is very computer literate and is looking into it. But I will tell her what you say Roy.

Ann Google throws up 'History Book Corner' on Facebook, it's recent . "instant access of rare genealogy books " etc...so maybe they have sent messages to people that post on genealogy sites?

She is looking into that Rose as somebody else noticed it. Her concern was that the message was very general and to her private e mail not a facebook PM.

American website... my security does not seem to have any problem with it.

Possibly Ancestry have shared their email list.

Yes it was the American site and the person concerned is not on that site. Apparently it was a different e mail addy to the one Ancestry had. But it doesn't matter as long as everyone is careful what they click on. Nobody is saying it is a virus.
