Paul was the first early Christian to write that "men and women are equal" in the eyes of God. He was brave to say that from his Hebraic background. He was a Hebrew of the Hebrews (8 generations could be proven on both mother and father's side).

And I feel that the reason he laid down roles for women and men was very much because his early churches comprised a mixture of Greeks and Jews. And he was trying to avoid schism and keep them together. The Greeks would have wanted to include women more, I think. I doubt Greek worship of their many gods was as male-domionated a religion as Judaism had become by then.

So I surmise that Paul struggled to keep everyone together (men, women, slaves, free). In the same way that church leaders like the Pope and the Archbishop of Canterbury struggle to keep people together today.

Again, sorry that you seem to think I am being all those words- patronising, condescending etc. I am not - I really am not. And am not sure what keys to press to prevent you thinking I am. If you don't want to come across as patronising and condescending then stop being so. No point in denying in when it's there for almost everyone else to see.

Cynthia is right. Your attitude is enough to put anyone "wavering" off Christianity for life.

I'm not "attacking you" I'm having one last go at trying to get you to see reason and modify your attitude.

I almost feel sorry for you in your utter lack of self-perception. But then I think of how you've upset Cynthia, who I respect very much, and I don't feel sorry for you any more.

Gwynne. Self-perception is not my problem at all. Living in the real world is not my problem. After 34 years of marriage, 2 children, a management career that required my strengths and weaknesses to regularly be analysed by assessement centres, 360 degree appraisal with many many staff, I am as aware as anybody about what I do well and badly. And I have run hundreds of training courses in last 20 years and delivered hundreds of sermons in chapels and churches. And I get regular written feedback of how I have done and how I came across.

And never, never, have being patronising, being preachy, being attention seeking ever been mentioned apart from by posters on Genes chat. All the personality profiles I have completed since about the age of 25 were remarkably similar. Good listener, introverted, caring etc etc. Not what you seem to think I am at all.

And my daughter sums me up beautifully - "a really boring old man, but lovely with it". That will do for my epitaph :-) :-)

not everybody would want you banned John
some are trying to help you
ie to stop you getting banned
but soon as somebody trys to tell you where you are going wrong on this site
you get you back up and witter on and on

you have to remember some people have been here a long long time

I am somewhat reminded, for some curious reason, of the small child who puts their fingers in their ears and keeps saying laa laa laaaa

I think the whole issue of priests marrying could cause huge rifts within the catholic church. Traditionalists will find it very difficult to reconcile the notion with one of the fundamental bases for the denomination.

In some ways I don't really have an opinion either way but what I do worry about is the way in which it could divide a church.
