Michael has already said that he is using Windows 7 but not which version of IE he is using.

Just a thought - maybe we could start a debate thread about the pros and cons of different operating systems, browsers etc, so that threads asking for help do not become confusing

Going directly from IE7 to IE9 can create all kinds of hassles due to wrong / missing file associations esp when getting no-longer-mainstream stuff like Flash to work. That is why I suggested IE8 as a first step in order to get to requirement (1) a stable and reasonably up to date browser. IE8 is a significant improvement on IE7.

IE9s main claims to fame are better compliance with html5 (though still poor ) , faster ( untrue except on test pages ), runs Silverlight better ( true ), entices XP users to upgrade ( failed ). OTOH IE10 is shaping up quite well.

VISTA / Win7 / Win8 are all basically the same OS - none of them have any of the interesting things once promised in "Cairo" or a database driven file system in place of ntfs.

Win7 most important changes were to be a lot less demanding of the hardware and less intrusive with default security. Win8 is even more efficient with the hardware ( 'cos of the need to run on tablets and phones ) and as part of this has dropped all sorts of candy such as the aero interface.

The "new" Metro interface is an escapee from Microsoft Research intended for smart phones and tablets.

Somebody let the dogs out and now we have this very peculiar idea of two different GUI at the same time. I can see what Microsoft are aiming at from a commercial point of view but it is still nuts.

Microsoft did not want to have a split OS with different versions on desktop / tablet / SMartphone. Apple do just that without any obvious harm. Maybe the failure of CE burned more than they say.

What they did need for sure was an OS upgrade which would also drive sales of the new version of Office, the main cash cow.

Whether they have succeeded in either of this objectives I do not know but the share price is flat.

What is for sure is that Windows is not a suitable client for biz cloud based computing nor can it easily be embedded into TVs and such. Posts such as Michael's also show that it has reached the end of the line for most SOHO users too being huge technology overkill ... "because I can".

The whole MS thing has too much momentum to disappear overnight but Win8/Office2010 are surely last of breed. MS seem to be aware of this and have picked up the cloud with 2013 and their own tablet / smartphone mix. Versions for Android (soonish) and Linux (later) are likely which means that Windows itself is nearing end of story.

Surface is a cool if expensive (now) idea and will have a lot of real world use once the cost comes down apart from walk on parts in Spooks, Silent Witness etc.

Of course that begs the question as to whether people will still want to create information using an analog of the paper office such as Office.

Microsoft themselves are hedging their bets with excellent products such as OneNote and Coletta (in beta).

IE9 is pretty stable and certainly much better than previous offerings

I`m on Vista and using IE9 ,got no probs HD quality videos on Youtube as well.

As you are using Windows 7 I would recommend using Internet Explorer 9.

As Rollo says, there are other, much better browsers available. But if you are used to using Internet Explorer then you may wish to stick with it.

Are you actually getting an error message?

Go to MyComputer Control Panel Add/Remove Programs
remove flash
reboot

Within IE7 go to Tools | Internet Options | Programs | Manage AddOns
Disable anything and everything except if it is one of Microsoft's addins
Check that the search provider is either google or bing

Upgrade Internet Explorer to version 8 (free)

YouTube should now work. If it does not disable hardware acceleration and/or try with Firefox Sometimes YouTube can be got to work if you right click on the video space and select "PopOut". If this works when normal play does not then yr browser config is incorrect.

WARNING !!!
Some Youtube sites will want either to install a special codec and/or direct you to another site. Always, always decline.

InternetExplorer8 on XP is more than a bit behind the times and IE7 is even worse. There are two ways for XP users to get a modern browser
(a) upgrade to Windows8 ; older hardware may not support Win7
The cheap £ 25 upgrade offer has now expired
(b) install a modern free browser
The main options are Firefox, Chrome and Opera.
Chrome is fastest but the user interface nothing like the others, like/hate split 50/50.
It is less demanding of the hardware than any of the others inc IE.
Firefox is most user friendly, even has a skin allowing it to look like IE
Opera is closest to current html5 standards.

hi sorry i am a bit of a numty when it comes to computers i am using windows 7 also internet explorer. i have tried reinstalling flash player with no success. i closed my computer the restarted it it find it would not start so the repair program kicked in does this make sense.

Close BBC iPlayer if running
Right click on the black video
choose settings
unclick "enable hardware acceleration"
close browser and restart the browser

Chrome has its own flash player; does it work or not in Chrome?

It would help with this kind of problem if you stated operating system and browser (with version) as it makes a difference.

Have you tried closing your browser and restarting it? Sometimes it even takes a restart of the computer

when i go to veiw utube clips i am told i need to get flash player i have downloaded this am sill unable to veiw what am i doing wrong thank you .
