Defiant Theresa May yesterday stepped up her campaign to become Tory leader by confirming her plan for the UK to break free of the shackles of European judges.

She also suggested smashing the ‘state monopoly’ of schools and hospitals by letting them make a profit and demanded a new crackdown on unions.

Theresa May said it was time to consider boosting standards in education and health by letting schools and hospitals make a profit.

This woman reminds me of someone who became Prime Minister in 1979 :-| :-(

It has always amazed me how she has risen to the top with so little charm, charisma or abiliity. To compare her to Mrs T (who I dislike intensely) is an insult to a very disliked elder statesman.

It is clear that DC has lost control now. He has a deputy who he is at odds with. He has a front bench who just look bemused these days. May looks barking and desperate to keep career alive.

But Cam has an opposition who are even more clueless and look like a row of nodding dogs (like when you follow a heavily decorated car on the motorway).

I truthfully think that, if Respect and UKIP could get their act together and turf out and/or silence extremists in their ranks, we could have Galloway or Farage as next PM. At least we might move further forward than another 5 years under this Labour/Lib/Con coalition designed to make a sector of society quite wealthy ie politicos :-(

Personally I think May's ideas about schools and NHS are absolutley barking. Fortunately neither will affect us in Wales :-D :-D

Would it be a good idea if schools were privatised?

On the face of it, and not knowing how it would work - No.

Privitisation implies investment and ownership ulitimately for profit. If the profit were to be invested back in to the school, then fair enough, but its more likely to go into the owners or shareholders pockets.

Assuming the goverment would only give a finite sum per pupil, the owners would want their rake-off and not want to spend all of it for the advantage of the student.

Firstly, the title of the my opening post was the question - would you want our schools privatised, and as such I would like any comments to be addressed to the question asked, nothing more and nothing less :-)

Secondly, for the record, I do not think they should be privatised, in my view this would be disastrous, it would take us backwards about 100 years, and it would mean that you would be educated according to what a family could afford, and that would bring about a form of social cleansing in the education system :-|

Definitely not!! Unless, by privatisation, they mean gain charity status and be run like public schools - 16 pupils maximum per class etc.

Unfortunately we know that's not what is meant.
It would mean, IMO, less education, more indoctrination.
The education already fails many pupils. It's not an all round education any more, it's just learning things to answer the the SATS papers.

If it was privatised, the less capable would be left by the wayside, and education would be skewed to provide workers for whichever firms owned/funded the school.

Very divisive.

Would I want our schools Privatised ? No

Can I take pride in our Goverment? No

Can I take pride in the country? I don't know any more.

This country use to be a good solid country, people took pride in it for the right reasons. Things would be decided for the right reasons, not just to make money but what was right & what was best for our own country & people in it.
Then came 1979 & a lady who wanted everything privatised to make lots of money. She put millions of people of work, millions out of businesses out of business, nearly destroyed the unions that helped the working class along with making big cuts in education, emergentcy services, NHS & basicly bringing the falling into a big hole. It has just got worse ever since & won't recover while people like cam are incharge.

Like DET I was a little confused to how this would work, I thought that all head teachers in state run schools adhered to a set budget, they decide how it is spent. Like others have said it was to be privatised (sp) where would funds then come from? Yes I agree it could set the education system back 100 yrs.

I worked for the council when they decided to privatise school meals and look what a can of worms that opened up, all in the name of profitt. Can you imagine the amount of corners that would be cut makes me shiver.

It seems to work ok for Wellington, Uppingham, Harrow, Eton and so on. Mmmm, maybe not so well at Eton.

Another problem with privatising state schools is that we'd lose out in tax.
Those not initially funded by big business may start out as a few enthusiasts innocently setting up a school, but without government funding, they'd soon have to look elsewhere.
Firms would start to fund them, then, like public schools, get charity status, and get tax relief.
Now, we're not as green as we are cabbage-looking, and, as previous government ministers/high fliers in business/bankers have shown us, there's a way to SAY 'X' amount is to fund the school, tax is refunded and it, and the 'donation' ends up back in the pockets of some very wealthy low-life.

What I fail to understand is the idea that a school should be a profit making place.

it is for the education of our children not a business opportunity.

In order for any school to make a profit then all money for teachers, facilities etc., will have to be pruned

Where is the sense in this???

And I do not have any kids. But even I can see the many problems that are hidden in this scheme
