Un subs?

Can anyone tell me what is meant by 'un subs', used in several American police series, one being Criminal Minds? In the Dutch sub titles, this isn't translated. I asked some years back about torches being used when police go into a property, instead of lights being switched on, am still puzzled about this, and about another odd thing. Has anyone noticed that table lamps are often on in empty properties, even if they have been empty for some time?

I have always thought that they use torches because they do not know where the light switches are :-D

When entering an empty building (whether long term or recent) a torch is used in case any gas pipes have been cut either on purpose or accidently, to avoid an explosion.

You might have better luck asking on the Genealogy Chat Board. You may stand a better chance of finding somebody there that has come across this already.
Hope this helps.
