I see that in the reply box to contact owners of trees with possible relatives GR still has a preprogrammed message just asking for access to the person's tree.
I thought they were going to delete this. There was an earlier thread here in which it was discussed. Many people were irritated by such a blunt request without any explanation of interest - but of course - particularly for newbies - if you are presented with this formula you might well assume that is the approved approach.

Elizabeth, you can put your own message in the reply box, which I usually do, explaining why I believe the person may be an ancestor common to ourselves.

I agree that the original message is very stark and could be cosidered rude by the recipient

I did know it could be deleted and/or altered and I always give the reason why I'm contacting - sometimes it's me offering the the information! but I had thought that it had been agreed by Genes not to include this

GR have said they will get rid of the message..... as a first contact.

They said it won't happen immediately.

I'm not holding my breath.

Fed up getting that rude message, and replying (sometimes) asking who they are looking for.

Most people have replied, with info & saying they didn't know..... but some have been downright bl**dy rude :-P

Some people think it's their right to view anyone's tree!! I really hate getting these "requests" when the person doesn't give access to their tree :-P

Scozz, I recently contacted somone who had aperson in their tree with the same name and birthyear as one of my grandmother's brothers.
I did explain that to the person concerned. The message went unanswered for a few weeks then I received an email from GR advising that I had been granted access to the tree.

It turned out not to be the same person as in my tree or even in the same part of the UK. Nevertheless, given the common surname I granted access to my tree in case there was a connection further back.

I'll share, but the people who request to view my tree usually don't give me access to their trees........ that's NOT sharing.
