Pope Benedict will be hoping his successor has a forgiving nature ;-)

Pope Francis has met his predecessor for lunch, there is no public record of any previous meeting between a Pope and a former Pope, as the new head of the Catholic Church is usually elected after the death of his predecessor.

However, in 1294, Pope Celestine V resigned as Pope and Pope Boniface VIII was elected days later, and had his predecessor imprisoned. Celestine was dead within a year. ;-)
