LollyWithSprinklez Report 27 Mar 2013 14:47

I definitely had a sense of smell at some point, then had a lot of problems with my sinus and at that time everything smelt pretty nasty (About 20yrs ago)then gradually lost it :-S

Even perfumes are more from memory then sense

Sorry Emma for detracting from your thread :-)

Now that you mention it Emma NO!! :-(

'Emma' Report 27 Mar 2013 14:58

LOL, carry on, not a problem :-D

Interesting that you both have lost your sense of smell and
yet others on here enjoy the smell of spices and herbs. :-)

GinN Report 27 Mar 2013 15:08

Get plenty of kisses from Hubby - he likes garlic, too.
Can still taste quite a bit, but maybe that's why I like plenty of spices and herbs. Makes no difference to basic tastes like salt, sweet, sour and bitterness, and nothing effects the heat of chilli!
sometimes my sense of smell briefly comes back, usually in a shopping mall where the smell of coffe is strong, but only lasts about an hour - strange! :-S

'Emma' Report 27 Mar 2013 15:18

Just as well he likes garlic. :-D

My OH is not keen on perfumes and scented flowers yet can
stand the smell of curry, ah well can't change him now :-D

AnninGlos

AnninGlos Report 27 Mar 2013 15:25

I do like garlic and prefer my food not to be 'dry' so I like the cream sauces, well any sauces and most herbs as well, just not too hot, so very small amount of chillies.

GinN

GinN Report 27 Mar 2013 15:29

Just as well that I no longer bother with perfume - my OH suffers from rhinitis, and it sends him into a paroxysm of sneezing! That's compatibility for you...... :-)

Garlic is good for the heart

http://www.cnn.co.uk/2009/HEALTH/11/13/moh.healthmag.garlic/index.html

The French ( inc my OH) eat a lot of garlic and I get a lot of kisses <3 <3

....but be extremely careful when translating the word kiss into French you may not get the reaction you expect lol.

Ann I have tried but can' t get passed the smell of these
dishes, all my children and grand children are adventurous
food wise but not me. :-)

'Emma'

'Emma' Report 27 Mar 2013 15:50

Rollo it would do for mine if I ate garlic :-D

Garlic may be good for your heart, but it does nothing for your love life.
The smell of it makes me heave.
I love anything hot & spicy. OH drowns everything in olive oil & garlic.
He hates my preferred food & I hate his.
Wonderful.

So wise child who does the cooking in your house?

BrendafromWales Report 27 Mar 2013 16:22

Think some of these herbs and spices are an acquired taste.
When I was young my dad used to say there was something wrong with your taste buds if you had even brown or tomato sauce with food.Think the most we had then was elther apple sauce or mint, picked from the garden to make the sauce for lamb.

Over the years you tend to experiment,,couldnt stand garlic when went to Paris with school in 1951...and as for curry...no way....now I like a medium curry and after living for a while in Spain use a lot of garlic.
Maybe food was a bit tastier years ago....or is it an age thing?

'Emma'

'Emma' Report 27 Mar 2013 16:28

Good point Brenda, when I was young tomato sauce was
the only thing we had on the table apart from salt.
Back then choice was very little nowadays it's different.
My OH started eating curries etc when in the Army.

We take it in turns Emma.
If I cook, I adapt what I´m having so that he can add what he likes to it & vice versa.
If I make a traditional English meal, I leave the gravy off his so that he can put vinegar & oil on his veg (shudders).
If I make curry for myself, I cook something differen for him, or he makes something for himself. If he cooks fish, I insist on having mine without oil & garlic.
Sometimes, we both eat the same thing. For instance we both like hot pots in the winter & salad in the summer.
It sounds a bit complicated, but most English/Spanish couples I know do the same thing.

'Emma' Report 27 Mar 2013 16:46

Sounds good wisechild and makes sense :-)
When we used to holiday in Spain thought I'd give the
vinegar and oil a go but not for me and OH was the same.
Thank goodness we don't all like the same foods how boring
would that be?
As they say variety is the spice of life :-D
Can't get away from those spices :-)

PollyinBrum Report 27 Mar 2013 16:56

I love cooking and use every type of herb/spice, peppers, garlic, curry etc . We enjoy experimenting with a variety of dishes from around the world. The husband of one of my friends will not eat anything other than very plain food, it can be quite a challlebge trying to please him when they come to dinner. When we go to their house for a meal OH always complains (later) that everything was tasteless, just goes to show we are all different, it's just a personal taste. :-D

'Emma'

'Emma' Report 27 Mar 2013 17:07

I don't eat very plain food but detest it when out for a meal
and spices and herbs over power the dish. Do prefer the taste
of natural foods as I know what I'm eating. :-)

Sharron Report 27 Mar 2013 17:11

I don't like chilli at all but I don't mind a bit of English mustard or horseradish.Different flavour with the heat.

Am addicted to pickled anything and use garlic and onion to excess.

I don't like the taste of wine either but don't mind it in cooking.

Sharron my Aunt does not drink but uses wine in her cooking, you should try her Sherry trifle ;-)
