Several years ago I read a warning by the Fire Brigade that said appliances should not be left while you go out. Since then I have never left mine. So it isn't a new thing, just something pretty bad with some of these dishwashers etc in a batch.

It's worrying that these appliances aren't as safe as we expect them to be especially as a lot of people run them overnight on special electricity tariffs. Also people put them on and then go out shopping or to work etc. In this day and age you would have thought the safety measures would be top notch.

Happy if this thread has saved anyone from the heartache of a house fire.

Another dishwasher fire in this area yesterday but they didn't say what make, it is not only Bosch, it's Neff and another one (can't remember which though).

Quick update, Bosch man came and said no sign of overheating, but he replaced the suspect electrical component in the door as a precaution.

Very dangerous . We run our dishwasher overnight as we have the two part electric tariff, its not a Bosch but it does give you food for thought. I have thought hope it doesn't leak and flood but never thought of a fire hazard :-(

If it's saved your daughter the hassle and possible heartache of a house fire, then it's been worth posting this thread.

Hope she gets hers fixed properly asap

I was trying to find this thread to say thanks for flagging it up, but was unable to locate it again.
I passed the info onto my daughter who rang Bosch and her's is one of the affected batch, now waiting for an enginerrs visit.

Hi,

We recently had our Bosch dishwasher serviced due to a 'hazard'.( after seeing a recall in a newspaper here). OH and I had already (a few years ago) paid for a repair after smoke billowed out of the dishwasher..... Didn't say no to a free service this time :-D.

Well I knew there had been discussions on dish washers on these threads Ann, and with the fire causing such devastation and the death of the family dogs, it must have been very nasty indeed.

Forewarned is forearmed, they say, and so I thought I would bring it to people's notice again.

Difficult to believe that people have not seen the warnings now isn't it? We were amazed that we hadn't seen any warnings until Dorset Fire brigade ran a campaign on TV and in the papers a couple of weeks ago.

We had ours fixed yesterday although, according to the engineer he had not seen any problems with any of our model that he had visited to check. He did change the control switches though which is where the problem is. since we knew of the problem and had 2 weeks to wait for an appointment, we only ran the washer about 3 times on a quick wash and watched it closely. So pleased to get back to not having to wash up by hand.

Devastating house fire prompts warnings over recalled dishwashers

A serious house blaze which left two people in hospital and their four dogs dead from smoke inhalation was caused by a faulty dishwasher, according to fire investigators.

A man and woman were rescued from an upstairs window from the house on Kestrel Close in Mulbarton at about 2.40am yesterday morning.

The pair were taken to the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation, but their four dogs died on the scene despite the efforts of emergency teams to resuscitate them.

Investigators believe the cause of the blaze was an electrical fault on a dishwasher manufactured by Bosch – a model which was the subject of a safety notice originally issued in 2011 because of a potential fire risk.

The company issued an urgent product recall on a limited number of Bosch, Neff and Siemens branded machines which it says “may overheat and in very rare cases cause a potential fire hazard.”

Richard Herrell, group manager for Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service, said the Mulbarton blaze served as a warning for anybody with concerns about their kitchen appliances to check whether they could be affected.

“We have conducted the fire investigation and we believe the cause of the fire to be a Bosch dishwasher,” he said. “The advice we would give is that if anybody has any concerns about whether their product is subject to a recall they should go to the Electrical Safety Council website. It gives people guidance on which units and which serial numbers are affected.

“Bosch has been working very proactively in reassuring their customers and it is very rare that these machines can cause a fire, but it has happened here so we want to raise the awareness of it being a problem.”

Mr Herrell said the fire also reiterated the vital life-saving importance of fitting and checking smoke alarms.

“These people were alerted by the operation of a domestic smoke detector which certainly saved their lives. It was a serious fire and the building was very densely populated with smoke, so it presented a serious risk to life.

“We see it time and time again. It does not get any more traumatic than what these people experienced, but they are so grateful they had the alarms fitted, and so are we.”

Earlier this week, following a similar dishwasher fire which killed two family dogs in Wales, a Bosch spokesman said the company had made every attempt to contact owners of the affected model to rectify the problem, and had so far managed to locate 163,000 of them.

The manufacturer is also voluntarily undertaking a free in-home repair programme of affected dishwashers, which were manufactured between 1999 and early 2005.
