There will always be those who abuse the system, but it's a good to know there is somewhere for people really desperate for food to go :-)

what about those people who come here from EEC countries
they have to be paid a higher rate benifits
if their country pays a higher rate job seekers
so will those people get vouchers instead of money

i bet they are exempt ;-)

Kemp is there any way of weeding out those who abuse the system? Anything in place.

I think a lot of the items in the food banks are donated by firms, in this area there was a drive to ask for donations and then they asked for money. So, if they are buying in the food who decides what is needed?

Although I can see the reasoning behind food vouchers, maybe another option would be for there to be free cooking classes, for those who have never been taught how to cook, and classes for those who want to cut back on what they spend, some have never been taught how to live within there means.

I cook for very little, making more than one meal at a time, saves loads, even on fuel. I often make batches of soups, pies, casseroles, bolognaise, I also make portions of mash potato, when they are cheap, mix them egg, milk and butter, and then freeze, it means when I'm busy, I don't have to prepare, and they are just as tasty as when fresh.

Time it seems is a thing a lot of people think they haven't enough of, but by setting aside an afternoon, or evening a week to cook, can save loads.

I know of many who will say they haven't enough money, but if they sat back and looked at what it is they spend, they could save a fortune.

Also with vouchers, as someone else has said, is that it can make the person receiving them feel different from others, it can have a stigma attached. I also feel that what you can buy with vouchers isn't necessarily, what a family would want/need, everyone's taste or needs are different.

Having said all that, I'm happy that those in need get help, whoever they are, and wherever they come from.

Yes they watch who is being given vouchers and why and how often ....but if they have more than 3 in a period of time they are requested to go to one agency giving out vouchers and are flagged to other agencies

Those who buy the food decide from a lot!! haha of research into what people NEED to survive

BUT I think what we give out is crap!! not enough or the right stuff

Lynda I also agree with you but people who often come in want something for nothing!!!
They get something and do nothing for it

The years of make do and mend have long gone if it dont come in a packet they cant cook it and often dont want to learn...

Food is given to stop the waste of "crisis loan money" going on unneeded goods!!! and unnedded is only decided by the individual person

Many Brits seem to think that Britain helps the world, and no other Country does,.they do.
Having "lived" in Spain, I lived there one week in four for a while, they had a hall where pensioners who wanted to, could go for a cheap lunch, that wasn't just for the Spanish either, it was all pensioners.

Also my father, English, had to have help from the Spanish equivalent of Social Services, they helped, no charge, he wasn't destitute, far from it, but he needed help, until I got there and they gave it., unlike Social services here, who when I told them I was bringing my dad home, and he needed help for a week or two, they told me to leave him at Gatwick, and let them deal with him. :-(
