I Hate Fireworks

Our dog was exactly the same as yours Uzzi until a few years ago she would cower and cry every time there were nearby or even distant fireworks.

The vet said we were rewarding her anxiety by looking concerned and fussing over her at the first bangs were making her more anxious. As pack leaders we needed to show her that the noises were of no concern to us at all and she would follow our lead.

Following his advice, we stopped trying to comfort her, instead, although it was really painfully hard to do, we ignored her completely, no matter how much she shook and cried and we showed no reaction to the fireworks ourselves.

Through anxious eyes we could see a change in her, she calmed down and each time there were fireworks over the next few nights, she was more relaxed.

The following year she started a bit of trembling, but now stayed on the floor and settled quickly.

5 years on, she is a 14 year old who, at the first bang, sighs resignedly and goes back to dozing :-)

Worth a try Uzzi..............we didn't think for a second it would work, but it did :-D

They seem to love their noisy fireworks in these hot countries. Anything like a Saints Day (and there seem millions of them) or Confirmation and they seem to celebrate.

I can only think that fireworks in these Catholic countries in Med are a lot cheaper than ones we buy in UK :-S

I can never understand why fireworks have to be quite so loud, I love the lights of them but not the noise Hope your mutts are ok.

Poor Mutt :-(

I don't like fireworks either. Not so much a light display, they now sound like a bombing raid :-S

I am sitting here with my old 11yr old nearly 12 mutt rigid on my knee. Rigid I say apart from the tremble that is going through her body and the rapid heart beat I can feel.
poor little lamb is petrified by the huge booms that are going on around us.
It´s 1st confirmation here, and something to celebrate as they did last night with the put put fireworks but todays are huge cannon type booms.
