Thanks again for the replies. RootsWeb looks like another good site, but I have the same sticking point. I have made notes against ancestors on the GU site, and these wouldn't be transferred with the Gedcom. I'm sure my family would soon get bored, looking at hundreds and hundreds of names and dates, with no explanation about who lived where and why, and what they did for a living.

It's my own fault, really. I should have considered that other family members might want to find out about our ancestors. I started off on Ancestry, and, since they allow family members to view trees for free, I wish I'd stayed there.

I have decided, now, to give my GU login details to my family, with the threat that, if they do more than look, I'll chop their fingers off, haha.

Not too sure on this, its been a long time.
But don't RootsWeb (WorldConnect) have a specific way for you to do this via downloading your Gedcom on there.

Open a free registration. Send GEDCOM from your account. Upload onto GR's free account.

There will be no documents or photos attached as GEDCOM are data only. Add separately.

Give the new free account log in details to your relatives. Just remember to update that too when new information becomes available. :-D

Porkie_Pie - I've had a look at Tribalpages, and it seems a good site. Unfortunately, I've tried twice to import Gedcoms on to the MyHeritage site, and, whilst I can get the list of my ancestors, I can't make that list form a tree. Obviously, I'm doing something wrong! I would have another go, but I've made lots of notes on the GU site, and these wouldn't be copied across with the names.

Mayfield - Similar to your suggestion, I thought I would give my relatives my log in details, and let them view the tree as if they are me. I would feel guilty doing that, and worry that GU would find out and delete my tree. There's also the problem of my family members logging on at the same time as me, from a different computer - I may get locked out! And then, as you mentioned, there's the possibility of one of my ancient ones clicking something they shouldn't and causing chaos. Despite all that, I think this is the option I will go for, and trust to luck that nobody does anything stupid.

There is the option of course to simply log on from their computer next time you visit.

Make sure you log out afterwards as if they go on again as "you" they could do untold damage to your carefully researched tree!

Ancestry allows you to invite family members to view your trees. They just need to register as free members. Perhaps this is something GR could look into doing in the future

Regrettably, my aunts and uncles are in their 80's, and barely know how to turn a computer on. They would never cope with importing GEDCOMs and new software. (I even tried to do that myself, and failed miserably!) I was hoping that they could access my tree, where everything would be laid out ready for them to view.

I can understand why GU restricts access to members - people could copy your information without paying to research themselves - but it's a shame that family non-members, who have no interest in making their own tree, can't see the fruits of my labours - for which I have paid.

Unfortunately GR does not allow you to share your tree with none members or free members. However, if you download your tree as a GEDCOM (GR will email it to you) you could then forward it to your family members. They can then download free software for example Legacy and then the GEDCOM can be viewed.

Is there any way that my family can view my tree without having to subscribe to GU?

It seems such a shame that, after all the hard work I've put into building my tree, no one is going to see it.

I've tried using the MyHeritage site. It's great from the point of view that you can invite anyone you like to see your tree for free, but the down side is that you can have only 250 people on your tree before you have to pay - which I don't want to do.
