same thing happened in decimalisation
a double bounty was 9d, when it went decimal it went to 4p which was nearly 10d

4x2.4= 9.6d

I remember Mars Bars doing this trick when I was very young. A Mars Bar was 5d and had been 5d for yonks. Then they reduced the size by 20% and still sold it for 5d.

A few months later they brought out a new bar with much more "goodness" and 20% bigger for 6d. And so it has gone on. I think Mars Bars (now probably about £5 a bar) were a barometer of inflation for about 30 years.

I am with Mayfield. These clothes shops are continually reducing the quantity of material but keeping sizes the same :-( It is scandalous ;-)

Son is so good at supermarket bargains - he is like a sniffer dog.

His best one was Tesco last week - he always checks the Bargain Shelves first and he got 5 pork loin chops for 29p and two packets of stir fry pork for 40p. each.

So as he works it out he has 9 dinners for £1.09 (about 12p each) plus veg.

The meat was perfect - had to be sold within 2 days. Split up, bagged and into the freezer it went.

Just re-checked Asda prices on:
Fairy All In One Dishwasher Tablets
24 tabs @ £7 = 29.2p per tap
70 tabs @ £10 = 14.3 per tab

Neither are on Special this week!

I always look at the shelf labels in the supermarkets for the best buy on a branded items:
The one on Special Offer is not always the best buy!

I checked the shelf label last week with dishwasher tablets as mental arithmetic is not my strongest point!

The smaller packet of 32 tabs was on "special offer" and worked out at 25p per tab
The larger pack of 72 tabs was not on offer, yet it equalled 17p per tab.

:-D :-D :-D at Mayfield!

Trouser manufactures are skimping on waistband sizes, what really bothers me is they have got into my wardrobe and altered the ones I have had for ages too! ;-)

I love taking my teenage grandson shopping with us - he always finds the cheapest and doesn't pick the top brand if another one is cheaper. Obviously passing on what his mother learnt from hers!

Sometimes...just sometimes...the offers are in our favour.
One well-remembered one was Apricots in a foil pack in Tesco.

They were £2.18 a pack or you could buy 2 packs for £2. ..- Proper printed signs, not a 'shop' reduction'

If you only wanted one, it was still cheaper to get 2 and give one away.....

Gins.
That is exactly why shopping takes so much longer, but I think most shoppers are pressured by their children/grandchildren into buying things that they wouldn't normally buy and said children saying they don't like cheaper brands, in my house they wouldn't have any say in the matter.

Too true Wisechild, they must think we are thick!

The other week in Asda, baked beans were on offer in packs of 6 and packs of 4. It was cheaper to buy two packs of 4 than buy the pack of six

Grrrrrrrrrrr

What annoys me is seeing big signs saying something is half price, then in small print it says if you buy one at full price, the 2nd one is half price.
Haven´t been caught yet, but almost. :-0

It takes me a lot longer to do the shopping these days not only because of age/ inability to move fast but also have to scrutinise a lot of the "bargains" it is worth it In the end though because I can stay within my budget :-D

One that always amuses me in my local supermarket is Soothers, they sell a packet of 3 packs of 10 sweets for £1.37 and a single pack of 10 sweets for 45p :-S

When buying items with several different sizes of the same thing (like mayonnaise) I use the info on the shelf label where it says, in tiny writing, the price per 100grams. I then buy the best value one and it isn't always the largest.

What does irritate me is when things like multipacks of crisps sometimes have price per 100grams and sometimes price per item.

Gee

Gee Report 21 Jul 2013 15:21

The thing with the squeezy mayo is.........you cant get the last 100ml out of the buddy bottle!

You can get packs of 25 fags now. But Mo is right, I did get a free whistling fag last week!

Potty Report 21 Jul 2013 15:18

Persie, some supermarkets work it out for you - giving the price per gm of different sizes, which does help.

I seem to remember that cigarettes sold in machines were always less than twenty. Think that was to bring the price down to something the machines could handle.

And what about special offer packs of 2 or more where it is cheaper to buy the individual items!

Shopping used to be so simple - now you need a Maths degree and eyes like a hawk.

Persephone Report 21 Jul 2013 15:06

Mayonnaise when bought in squeeze bottle has contents as say 400 ml...

A jar of same mayonnaise will have its contents as 380gms or some such.. and I don't know much about standing in the supermarket and converting mls to gms and vice versa to work out which one is the cheapest.

It's enough to make me take up smoking again.. packs of 19 doesn't even sound right.

You can have 10, 20 etc or half dozen, dozen and no one ever has a baker's dozen... but 19 ciggies in a packet .. what do you call that? Packet of daylight robbery. :-)

Potty

Potty Report 21 Jul 2013 14:56

Comparing the price of milk is confusing as well. Some similar sized packs are 2L some 4 pints and they don't all have both the imperial/metric sizes on so comparing one shop with another is not easy.
