When I was working, part of my job was to run the meat inspection service for the council.

I well remember the conversion of the local abattoir to a multi species one to include emu and deer.

it never really took off (no pun intended...although it would have been a good one :-D)

There is a small roadside shop on the main road from Mandurah to Bunbury that still sells emu pies.

I have also come to the conclusion that all exotic meat tastes like greasy chicken! Certainly frogs' legs do, as does the genuine(?) chicken from the local Chicken fast food outlet :-D

Just wondering.......... I know all the swans in UK "belong" to the queen; she is the "head of State" of Australia, does that mean she owns Aussie swans too?

I went outside about ten minutes ago, to give a drink to the new plants I put in pots on Sunday (on the back deck).

I saw something move, out of the corner of my eye......... and there was a SNAKE on the table!

The plants didn't get their drink.

I went inside & watched Mr Snake from the kitchen window....... he moved, and he has to be 3 metres long. Only carpet snake, but a snake is a snake!

I'm going out in an hour....... I hope he's gone when I get home :-(

OH and I found a store that sold the cat flaps that are operated by the cat's microchip.

After a bit of umming and ahhing we decided to see if any of the local glazing companies supplied them as the cut-out for the existing cat flap is the wrong size.

As usual, we did nothing except suffer another couple of visits by our Feline Fieve

Last week we received a letter from our vet asking us to take our two cats in for a quick check as some of the microchips they had been using had failed and they were checking all animals they had micro chipped.

Took the cats in yesterday.......Yep, no response from the micro chip!

So they were re-chipped but with a different type.

Two points:

!) If we had spent $300+ on the cat flap and having it fitted, I would have been back and forth to the pet store claiming the flap was defective, which would have been the case no matter how many times it was replaced.

2) More importantly, now we have to register our cats, should one or both have been picked up by a Ranger, they would have been scanned and as no response from the original microchip, put down! :-( :-(

It is going to cost the manufacturer big time.

When we were at the vets we were told that apart from emergencies all they were doing this week was rechecking all animals micro chipped by them with this particular make

I always ask the vet to scan for the microchip in my cats when I take them in for their annual check up and boosters - occasionally the chips can move from the site where they were injected and migrate elsewhere in the cat's body, so might not register if the cat was only scanned in the usual chip location area.

It only takes them a couple of seconds to check it's still registering, and gives me peace of mind.

Yes the vet did check to see if the chips had migrated to another site, but all scans were negative.

The vet has said that he will now scan the cats during their routine visits. :-)

I wasn't suggesting migration was the reason the original chips in your cats weren't responding - it was more a cautionary note to other cat owners that chips can occasionally migrate, and might not be picked up on a cursory scan by a vet or council official/ranger type if the cat was picked up or sadly involved in an rta etc.

It only takes the vet a couple of seconds to scan and check the chip is in its usual place - if one had migrated I would be tempted to re-chip, so there was no chance a chip would be missed if my cat ever went missing and was scanned.

Never used cat flaps can't see the point and anyway not a great idea to cut holes in ancient doors. Round midnight they know it's supper, lockin and they can go out pretty early - somehow they know when it is Sunday. I like to know where they are at night, safe.They travel around with us sometimes, no problems same routine.

Cats can shout plenty loud enough when they want to come in / go out and soon learn to work around people's routines.

I think they look better without collars.
