This post has been reinstated this morning (for how long). I do think many posts are put up mainly to cause trouble. They are threads designed to wind up put up by people who like to wind up others as part of their daily fun. To get the support of those who agree and the antagonism of those who don't.

The macho men are countered by the equally macho women - or a group of fairly submissive and friendly people individually who group together very quickly and very effectively to defend their cause.

They get great pleasure in suggesting that their group is fun-loving and others can spoil their fun and are best ignored and are not normal "like us". Well, a recent American study into the effects of social networking on the internet (which chat has largely become) leads to a big increase in self-confidence and group and individual narcissism (see Wikipedia on "narcissism" if you are interested in this study)

Narcissism is take and take, not give and take. I am right, and you are wrong. Something we cannot get away with in normal life - we would be ignored and very lonely.

There is no way that GR will reveal who reported a post. We have to trust that they review reports and monitor (as they said they would) people who regularly report posts not worthy of being reported. It has been disclosed here in the past that people have received warnings for reporting too many posts.

As for people saying on the boards that they have reported posts - when people have done that they have received a load of abuse from other people. Why would they invite that a second time?

I can't remember the last time I reported a post but when I do I usually say I have and why. People may disagree but it's up to GR in the end and none of the few posts I have reported (mainly for personal abuse) have been reinstated.

I have also reported posts I see as racist or homophobic and they disappeared forever as well.

I have no idea why the first post here was reported but usually, lately, it's iffy jokes that are reported or posts containing language that some find unacceptable. Swearing doesn't bother me in the least but I do understand that some people really find it offensive, so I don't swear on here any more than I would in a room full of strangers. It's bad manners.

A step forward would be to make the report button available only to paying members so GR could more closely monitor who is doing the reporting.

Having said that - if you think what you are about to post is likely to be reported maybe it would be better not to post it. Why go out of your way to cause offence? If you do carry on and post in those circumstances then don't moan about it when it's reported.

I've had very few posts reported and all were reinstated unless the entire thread went - it's not difficult to stay within the guidelines.

They will be back....... but will they reinstate the OP or take the lazy way out and delete the whole thread?

I think it depends on who at GR deals with it, there doesn't seem to be a rule at all.

Trouble is that several posters are so busy saying that someone or other has not read their posts or their friends' posts that they don't read what is there.

Group narcissism - now that makes a good case study :-) :-) ;-)

I find it quite interesting that during this afternoon and evening some new posts talk about "Banging on" about posts that have been reported. Perhaps if those posters had had the opportunity to read the opening post of this thread before it was reported they would know that its content did not advocate the removal of the, "Report" button but did advocate a different system of processing reported posts.

As things are any member of GR, fee paying or free members can report any post for any reason whatsoever. Their reason for reporting a post may be genuine in so far as the posts content in some way breaches GR's terms and conditions of use of the message boards. Their reason may also be malicious, anything from the reporter simply disagreeing with the posts content to the reporter simply disliking the poster. At present whatever the reason the reported post is instantly replaced with "This post has been requested for review" which remains in situ until such time as someone at GR decides whether the report is justified or not.

If justified the post is removed which if that was the opening post means the entire thread is deleted. If the report is not justified the post is reinstated often only to be reported again by the same reporter.

Because the process is as far as the reporter is concerned, anonymous there is nothing to deter the malicious reporter. My solution would be still to instantly remove the post which has been reported but in addition to the current "Awaiting review" notice also show the board name of the reporter and the review category cited. E.G.
This post has been requested for review
Reporter: Jonesey
Review category: Hateful/Abusive Content.

If the review had been requested for a genuine reason then who should have cause not to be known as the reporter.? On the other hand however would a malicious reporter wish to be named?

P.S. I think that it is worth reading all the posts on the first page of this thread just to get a feel for the views of others who have read the opening post.

dont think a psycholocial shrink is needed to find a reason.

1.either someone was offended,

2. someone saw that it could be seen to entice a backlash of a reported post or thread.

maybe theres a 3rd but I aint a mind reader. ;-)

Just to add that the thread that i put up was not really a joke but the way that our friends from Yorkshire would say a phrase. The content was purely fictitious and not meant to be taken seriously.

Absolutely Kay, I can not for the life of me see the point of " banging on ;-)" about a post or thread being reported when 9 times out of ten the post or joke will end wtih either " lets how long this one lasts" or " go on do your best " or " heres on 1 for the itchy finger" why why or gowdsake why post it ? Its like watching a gang of naughty 9yrs old see how far they can push their luck. Then you get an 100 post thread about what sad boring lives or how they ( I assumed they mean the RRer) doesnt get out much or needs a SOH transplant....errrmmmm you think? Twice I have backspaced because a word use daily isnt that bad but isnt acceptable to post on here............. doesnt take a brain of bloody Britian does it.... :-P :-P :-P :-P

Off to watch Fiona get booted out of SCD :-D :-D :-D :-D :-D

You cant have it both ways.....

If you report a thread or post you feel justified for your reason and dont expect to be lamblasted for doing so......so if your thread or post is asked for a review just accept it.Its only words on a screen......much ado about naff all. :-S
