	Rollo, you say under French law that the passenger can also be fined if the driver is drunk but in the joke it was the passenger who was drunk and the driver sober. Perhaps your remark "Jokes are always more amusing when they have a grain of truth in them." was a little unfair.

	Rollo I am confused because I got the impression that in the joke the wife was not drunk but the passenger was. I am assuming that you don't mean the driver can be fined if the passenger is drunk? If not I also assume that you were not criricizing the joke?

	Under French law the passenger can also be fined for the driver's drunk driving even if they are within the limit. That includes foreigners. Fines are on-the-spot and heavy. Whatever you may see in 'allo 'allo or Pink Panther French police and gendarmes are heavy duty issue, they don't do stupid or nice unfortunately. The breath test limit is just over half of the UK so it is almost impossible to have a drink and be legal. Hence the thousands of bars and restaurants in France which have gone bust. French police are used to the tens of thousands of LHD cars which visit France each year, especially as around a half are involved in traffic incidents and nearly all of them pay a fine at some point. Jokes are always more amusing when they have a grain of truth in them. :-0

Zis 'appened to an Englishman in France who was totally drunk: The French policeman stops his car and asks the gentleman if he has been drinking. With great difficulty, the Englishman admits that he has been drinking all day, that his daughter got married in the morning to a French man, and that he drank champagne and a few bottles of wine at the reception and a quite few glasses of single malt thereafter. Quite upset, the Policeman proceeds to Alco test (breath test) him and asks the Englishman if he knows under French Law why he has just been arrested. The Englishman answers with humour: "No, not at all! Do you know that this is a British car and that my wife is the driver..... on the other side?"
