I really could do with some advice, i'm new to all this.

There is a possibility that my great grandmother is still alive.
My Grandad has not seen his mother since he was 13-14 years old.

There is a chance she might of been pregnant when she left.

We have no clue if this child survived, died or was given up for adoption.

I do not have any names or other personal information for this child at all. Is there any way of finding this out through the mothers name?
im desperate.

my great grandmothers name is; Elizabeth S A Pountney. her maiden name is; Wood
She married Arthur Pountney in 1945 in Poplar, london, England.

Welcome to the boards, Jade.

If you get the birth certificate for Elizabeth to find her exact date of birth, you can then use this information to search for possible deaths.

There is a birth for a Lindsey/Wood showing on free bmd in 1965.

There is a Pountney/Wood birth in Poplar in 1963.

You should be able to find bmd's up to about 1970 here

http://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.pl

If she was still married to her husband a child should be registered in the husbands name even if he is not the father

Battenburg

Battenburg Report 19 Jul 2014 01:28

If she did not marry the child will be registered in both surnames
Found my mother was born 14 months before my grandparents married and shes registered under both surnames

So if you find one look for the same reg number and see if the other surname comes up

Middle initials can be very misleading.

I have several members of my family who on their birth certificates they have one or 2 names. But over the years they 'adopted' more middle names.

My mum, her mother and my ex m.i.l. all did this in recent years, but those mentioned above were in the late 19th - early 20th century.

And when a death is registered the information is only as good as that which is known to the informant. IE A neighbour or good friend may register someones death, but may not realise that the person they are helping had no middle names or many. Or that they celebrated their birthday on a day that was not correct (my mother is a prime example of this!).
