If you know her birth name you should be able to find the birth on FreeBMD

You can then order a copy from the GRO with the ref shown

No we don't know if she was given a name at birth as she was very young when she was adopted

Well a child will have been registered at birth even if they were then adopted

Without a name then you are stuck

People can access their adoption files but once they pass then the files are closed

Sorry Shirley but the rules have been changed
and children/grandchildren can now get access of dead adopted people.
But and it's a big But they have to use a intermedat and that cost !
We have just got my FIL's records.

FYI
I have just looked and it cost us about £350
we used a company called CBM.
We had no birth name only his adopted name.

If you enter your postcode in the following link you can find an agency that can help you look for the adoption files:-

http://www.adoptionsearchreunion.org.uk/help/database/

All the agencies have their own charges so you will need to ask about cost before you get too involved.

Thanks for that Kath I wasn't sure how you would find a Intermediary service
as we were given the name of the comapny we used by the LMA.
And as the changes were so very new not all departments were up to speed, it didn't help that we live outside the UK.

Your right Shirleyit was a lot of money
but my OH wanted to know where his father came from.
As per norm there was the the stories that his mother was in service
and the son had his way !

The truth was she was 38 unmarried and she worked in a washouse
and he was born in the workhouse.

We didn't want contact with other family, so for us it was a case of finding
any records and getting his birth name, form there you can trace yourself where the mother came from.

It would have been a lot easier if FIL had applied himself but he never got round to it .

Just had another thought
if Lynn's G/mother was ( "Adopted" ) before 1927 then there won't be any records at all
as the offcial list only starts in 1927 when all adoption had to be registerd.
