Is that a first name for someone, I have it as a witness on a marriage certificate so I don't know if I have read it right or if it is male or female. Thanks.

Nothing on freebmd for the name, is it perhaps abbreviated or just badly written? Can you find them using the surname?

JoyLouise

JoyLouise Report 2 Jun 2023 13:48

Could it be Joachim ?

ZZzzz

ZZzzz Report 2 Jun 2023 13:49

The first 3 letters are definitely Joi but can't make out what the rest are, also the other witness surname is badly written but that is female as the first name is Margaret. :-D

JoyLouise

JoyLouise Report 2 Jun 2023 13:50

Could be Margaret’s mother’s surname as a middle name?

ZZzzz

ZZzzz Report 2 Jun 2023 15:34

I've given up on that for a while, my head is spinning at the moment.

Could it be 'Ja' rather than Joi?
Just thought it could be a short version of Jasmine.

Is the marriage cert one with an image which we can view online?

When was the marriage? Should we be thinking of modern names or "old-fashioned" names?

What is the person's surname?

ZZzzz

ZZzzz Report 3 Jun 2023 12:54

All I can say is I don't know if it can be viewed on line, the name looks like Joism middle name is James surname is Frame so I don't know if it is male or female, he / she is witness to a marriage in 1919.

Also, what area are we talking about?
I find it quite useful to say a group of 'unintelligible' letters in the local dialect.
The vicar may be from elsewhere, and just writes down what he hears.

On my Cornish side, I have 'Landeryou's'
On her baptism, my ancestor's surname was spelt 'Landeria'
Her siblings were baptised as:
'Landeriou', 'Landeriowe', and Landerio

Other forms of the name are:

Landirriowe
Landerow
Landeriow
Landeryeo
Landerioe
Landearyou
Landerrio
Landerion
Landeryer
Landeryo
Landeruou
Landeriu
Landayoue

However, say all these names in a strong Cornish accent - and they almost sound the same! :-D

Please tell us the names of the bride and groom - then we'll know exactly which marriage to look for.

From the info in your "Researching box", I assume the marriage was in Gateshead/Newcastle area.

Could the name be a badly written "John"?

A John James Frame was born in South Shields reg district in 1897.
Also one in Newcastle in 1893.

Looks like the witness could be the 1893 John James Frame - birth already posted.
Listed as James on the 1911 census above.
