I have a marriage certificate from 1862 from the Derbyshire area, which states in the
"Rank or Profession of Father" F.W.LH.
Anyone have any idea what this means.

Regards
Malcolm.

Does his occupation in any census give any clue.?

Just a suggestion -

Derbyshire had a lot of textile mills.

FW might be Frame Work.
Or Fustian Weaver.

L might be Loom.

Have you transcribed it accurately - with no full stop after the L ?

But Names's suggestion is best - have you found him in censuses?
Can you tell us the bridegroom's name / bride's name/ father's name?

Looking at other family members who are Frame Work Knitters, may be the F.M the lh could another form of worker.

history.
The knitting frame was invented in 1589 by the Rev William Lee of Calverton. It was at first a simple machine, but was steadily developed through the eighteenth century. The first cotton stockings were made on a frame in Nottingham in 1730 using cotton yarn imported from India.

Thank you all for contributing.

Thanks for the names, Malcolm

The image is viewable on Ancestry, though not on FS. [EDIT: Oh yes, it is ]

The occupation isn't FWLH.
It looks like FWK - both fathers have the same occupation.

Here's Thomas's father Richard in 1861:

Richard Howitt
in the 1861 England Census
Name Richard Howitt
Gender Male
Age 52
Relation Head
Estimated Birth Year 1809
Spouse's Name Mary Howitt
Where born Heanor, Derbyshire, England
Civil parish Heanor
County/Island Derbyshire
Country England
Registration district Basford
Sub-registration district Ilkestone
ED, institution, or vessel 4

Household schedule number 65

Richard is a Stocking Framework Knitter.

So FWK is Frame Work Knitter.

Thankyou for your assistance, yes looking closer on the Family search site it is a K and not a Lh.
The FS site has a number of marriage details for Thomas and Matilda. and some have the camera image, which takes you to a copy of the marr cert.

But thank you all for your time in sorting this query.

Regards
Malcolm.

Looks like there might be a relation marrying on the same page of the OPR - the marriage recorded next after Thomas and Matilda is that of a Robert Millward and Matilda Bacon.

However Matilda Bacon's Father is shown as Isaac Gillott

You should have asked on here - possibility there are online records that one of us could access.
