I was reading back yesterday's chat about hop picking.....
We walked alongside the hop gardens, when we visited the NT castle last week. The hops had been harvested, so not much to see there, but the old pickers' huts and the information boards were interesting.
Apparently some families would travel to the hop fields each year and would stay in the same hut each time, often customising it by hanging up sheets etc. for their stay.

The farmers would pay their wages in tokens, which could be redeemed for cash at the end of the harvest. This way, the farmer knew that the workers would remain on site until the harvest was completed and not go back home leaving the task half done ;-)

I don't have ancestral links here, but think some were involved with hop picking in Herefordshire.
There, workers travelled from the South Wales coalfield to find work in their summer break.

Well this is a day of two halves! I had an early appointment this morning, and was bundled up. By the time I got back home about 11.30 the sun had put its bonnet on. :-) :-)

I am about the sit down with Charlie Bighams lasagne.

I bought a Sparkles light up lantern this morning with shortbread in it. May have one with a cuppa this afternoon. ;-) ;-)
