ps... alwats insist that the Teaching Assistant is fully qualified and attends specific training for Autism or other conditions. I am a qualified TA but there is an unqualified and untrained TA at my school who works with a boy with autism. Which I think is disgusting. She doesnt understand the ins and outs of how that child sees the world and copes with everyday things.

I work in a local primary school which has lots of children with different sp.needs. I have just started a project called 'toe to toe', which helps children with reading difficulties and Dyslexia, I would advise anyone to push their school to try it, its has an amazing improvement success rate. My main advice to any of you is to push for your childs rights. We have some very vocal parents and it does seem to work if you keep complaining to your LEA. If I can help anyone, please ask.

Can I just say (although I won't put it on the relevant thread) that although 'Jamies school dinners' is a fantastic idea and its great to get kids to eat healthily - our 'special' kids would find those changes EXTRA hard. Please don't feel guilty if your SEN child always eats the same few foods, that is part of the diagnosis! This is what I have just read in 'Asperger Syndrome - What Teachers Need to Know' ... 'Children with AS are sensitive to both the taste and the texture of food, and tend to be wary of new things and resistant to change. They are often creatures of habit where food is involved and often prefer to eat the same thing day after day. You can help them with this by adopting the following approach: ~ Get the child to taste just a very small amount of something new ~ Be prepared for a negative reaction to new foods. ~ Do not push the issue of trying a new food. ' I think this applies to most on the autistic spectrum - they can also be very sensitive to smell - any sensory input really. Jamie can't stand bright sunlight - wears his shades a lot. Just thought I would pop this on as its topical!! Maz. XX

Here is some very welcome advice from Bernice ....... Original Added by Bernice Scott on 19/02/2005 14:16:55 Autistic, Aspergers, Special Needs etc...For VAL I have read the thread entitled Autistic Spectrum and I would like to clarify a few things. I work for the LEA writing Statements and overseeing the statutory process when a referral is made. A statement should be reviewed annually by the school (Annual Review) to see if the needs of the child are being met through the IEP (individual education plan). If the child is not meeting the objectives on the statement or having their needs met then it needs to be amended with input from SENCO, Parent/Carers, any other professional involved i.e. Speech & language, Occ Therapy, Physio etc. When the Annual review has been undertaken a form should be filled in by the school and sent to the AEN dept of the LEA. The assessment officer will amend the statement accordingly. If a child is transfering to secondary school, the year 5 annual review is extremely important as the next school needs to know what that childs individual needs are. I suggest that if you are not happy with the support your child is or isn't receiving, contact the school and then if no luck phone the LEA. I hope this helps. Bernie xx Maz. XX

Maz (the Royal One) in the East End 9256 Report 19 Feb 2005 14:03

A statement is supposed to be reviewed extra carefully before kids go to secondary for just the reasons you state. Some statements will even specify which school the child should attend. You need to insist that this is done - go to the LEA Special Needs (or similar) department. Maz. XX

Hi Val, if I m not mistaken the statement your son has at the present school might change as he goes to another school, what is in the statement at present only applies to the present school named in the statement so you may find he will get assessed again, they may feel he needs more support, you must discuss this, good luck with his school move, its quick a distressing time for kids like ours not only a new school but new teachers and pupils, lets hope they support you in his move and make it less distressing for him.
